We’ve had lots of binding and quilting questions pop up on the blog throughout Quilting Month. Both seem to be skills that just take practice, and it helps to jump right in. Several people have asked why we’ve featured many doll- and baby-size quilts in our Quilt of the Day posts too. One of the reasons (in addition to their beauty and unique characteristics) is the accessibility of a doll-size quilt; it’s much easier to try your hand at a first binding or to trust your home machine (and yourself) with some free-motion quilting fun when the project isn’t too big and the stakes aren’t too high. Remember what Denyse Schmidt said in her interview earlier this month: “Trust that it’s going to look great!”
Here are just a few good links to answer questions we’ve had this month:
Binding your quilt
- What are the different ways to bind a quilt?
- What’s the difference between straight grain binding, cross grain binding and bias binding? (With a how to.)
- A continuous binding how-to with a mitered corner.
- Another binding tutorial with mitered corners.
- Binding tips (also includes a printer-friendly version) with a double-fold binding discussion.
- All about bias tape makers.
- How much binding will I need for my quilt? (yardage calculator)
- How do I do a turned binding/pillowcase binding?
- Example of turned binding (also referred to as a “pillowcase binding”).
- How do I do the “self-binding” approach?
- Example of a self-binding quilt.
Quilting your project
- Be sure you read Gina Halladay’s tips on machine quilting in her article for Quilting Month.
- Machine quilting basics.
- How can I perfect my hand quilting stitch?
- Nice resource for links to both machine- and hand-quilting tips. (Scroll down past the books.)
- What do different types of quilting look like?: hand quilting (front view), hand quilting (back view, same quilt as previous front view), professional long arm quilting, machine quilting at home with the feed dogs down, machine quilting at home, tied quilt.

I enjoy free motion quilting and I learned from a book (and it’s author) called “Show me how to machine quilt”. Highly recommended!
Thank you for compiling such great links! The binding process has always been a bit daunting to me, but I’ve gotten some great tips and ideas here tonight!
Thanks for being such a great resource! Looking forward to next month.
I’m delighted with this post. Earlier this week I attempted my first binding job and mutilated it. I think I’ve got the courage and resources to give it another shot now.
This quilting month was wonderful, thanks for all the information and all the eye candies. It was a pleasure to read it since the first day 🙂
Thanks for a great month on quilting. I’ve been quilting for a couple of years now but there is always something to learn or a new technique to try.

Great info, thanks. I have always used the “self binding” method on my quilts. I really want to try the pillowcase binding method but didn’t know where to start. Again thanks. I have so enjoyed quilt month!
Great! I’m always hopping on the net looking for an answer!
Thank you – you’ve inspired me to attempt my first quilt and now have saved me hours of searching the net. It’s much appreciated!
I can’t believe quilting month is over! 🙁 But hey, there’s next month….ohhhh…I wonder what next month will be!? YAY! 😀

Quilting month has been very inspiring and informative — thanks for all the tips and links.
I’m so sad quilting month is almost over! Thanks for all the great info.
Perfect! I have a quilt that’s just waiting for binding. I have a feeling I might just wing it, though!
Thanks again from a novice quilter. All this info is so helpful.
Thank you again for quilting month. I’ve really enjoyed each and every post!
Thanks for the great links and wonderful month of everything quilting!
Thank you for this post! I’ve never yet bound my own quilt. On the two quilts I made I just did the “pull the back fabric up and over”. But I’m going to try to add on binding on my next quilt and thanks to these links I feel confident that I can do it.
Thanks! This information is really helpful. I have enjoyed quilting month so much, that I don’t want it to end. 🙂
