November 19 ~ Gifts for Grandparents

on November 19 | in Handmade Holidays | by | with 368 Comments

While many of our other gift lists this month include great tutorials for the grandmas and grandpas in your life, grandparents are extra-special family members; we decided we needed a day (and a bounty of ideas) devoted to perfect gifts for grandparents. What are you giving grandparents this holiday season?

(Have you heard about Give-Away Day? Check it out, then come back here!)

Make It

spacer Brooch Keeper
Michelle from Quiltingmick designed this project to protect brooches. Enjoy her Brooch Keeper Tutorial (you could even tuck a new pin in for an extra-special gift).
spacer Travel Tissue Holders
We like the addition of a little, special trim to Min’s Travel Tissue Holder Tutorial on Vacuum Queen.
spacer Easy Eyeglass Case
This one is good for Grandpa too! Bayou Bags has a very Easy Eyeglass Case Tutorial so you can make multiples for all of those stray glasses.
spacer Fingerpaint Wall Art
Holly shares a project from a friend on her tutus & turtles blog. Her Fingerpaint Wall Art How-to is a nice way to help the youngest members of the family create gifts for grandparents.

Don’t miss these related tutorials from the SMS archives: Aprons, For the House, Pillows and Sachets.

Here are just a handful of fabrics we love for some of these projects. Click on the fabric images to visit the Sew,Mama,Sew! shop:

spacer Personalized Family Jewelry from SpoonerZ
Rachelle’s Spoon Endz Family Bracelet is just one of the great gifts in the SpoonerZ shop, where personalized (and really lovely) jewelry abounds.

Mix It

spacer Chocolate Fruitcake
Johanna at Green Gourmet Giraffe shares her “fruitcake offensive” process in her Chocolate Fruitcake Recipe. The recipe calls for some patience and time, but Johanna says the results are well worth it (and we know a grandpa or two who would love it!).

I’m not a grandma yet but would love that brooch keeper !

  210. Marie says:

chocolate fruit cake?! What a great twist on an otherwise not very welcomed food in my family! Every year my mom and i are usually the ones eating the fruitcake delivered by her neighbor because no one else will. But now with chocolate in the mix? i think we’ll get a better reaction.

  211. ran says:

The eye glass case would be SOOOOO simple and yet so helpful to those older ones, that have a pair of reading glasses in every room, and every vehicle, and every purse!!!

  212. The finger paint wall art is the greatest! My kids will love it and so will there grandparents.

  213. erin says:

maybe i’ll get lucky this time:)

  214. Deb says:

Great ideas. I especially like the tissue holder. How cute!

  215. Tiffany says:

I love that cupcake pincushion! I just finished making my mother-in-law’s gift (so my son’s grandma…)- the crochet hook holder you profiled earlier in the handmade holidays lineup! My own mom (other grandma) is getting a GPS holder. When you have a portable GPS that you put up and take down (and take with you on a trip) it pays to have a soft sleeve for it so you don’t damage the screen. So I made her a cute one- it’s pretty much like making a glasses sleeve… But came out great and she’ll love it! Unfortunately my own (and husband’s) grandparents are already gone, but I figured our moms are our son’s grandparents!

  216. Sonya says:

another fun giveaway & project list!
    thanks
    ~

  231. Rane says:

We are finaly getting all of the families together over thanks giving and going
to get a family potrate made for my parents. They have been asking forever!
I think that those feet and hand prints would be awsome too, maybe I will do

The Footprint Wall Art reminded my of a rug I did for my dad for Father’s day one year. I got a small carpet rug for him to but at the foot of his chair and I painted my little girls feet and had her step on it. It was really cute and he still has it.

The fingerprint wall art is totally cool. The brooch holder gave me an idea. Grandma doesn’t need a brooch holder, but she might really like something to store her jewelry in when she travels. She travels a lot (vacation, and visiting the grandkids) and something to carry her jewelry safely, and be able to use when she reaches her destination would be a good idea. But, what could it be?? Hmm…I will have to consult with Grandpa and ponder this idea.
