2008 Highlights

on December 30 | in Sewing Inspiration | by | with 51 Comments

2008 was a full year of sewing fun on the SMS blog. We introduced our forum, welcomed two amazing sets of board members and shared many favorite pattern reviews. Our general Flickr pool has over 30,000 handmade contributions and we had a blast with our series of theme months. Here are some of our highlights from the year:

Plus some of our favorite interviews with Amy Butler, Denyse Schmidt and True Up.

I just want to repeat that this is an AMAZING site for inspiration! I have learned so much over this past year from you and everyone that has contributed to your blog. I just got a serger for Christmas so I would like to see some super serger techniques or things to do with a serger that you normally do with a sewing machine. I’ve only just begun “practicing” with it and am finding it very fast and convienent. Keep up the great insights into the creative mind!

I have been so inspired by this blog over the past year! Thank you so much for the hard work that goes into making this site a great place to ask questions, find ideas for sewing projects, and reviews of patterns. My sewing goal for the next year is to make some great clothing using the tutorials and tips posted during Women’s Clothing Month on SMS!

Happy New Year! I love keeping up with this blog…so many great ideas and creative pieces. I really enjoyed quilting month and refer back to it quite often.

In 2009 I would like to get more ideas on sewing for men and boys. I’d also like to get some insight to how designers (professional and non) go about their creative process for patterns. I’m very interested in seeing the whole process from beginning to end.

I’d also like to be introduced to up and coming designers and handmade seller (etsy, etc.).

Here’s to hoping 2009 is filled with handmade hotness! =]

  4. Congratulations!!
What a wonderful feeling I have as a fabric designer for the job you are doing. It’s great that you can pass on the “sewing bug”, that gets in our body and don’t leave us anymore…
It’s very encouraging to see more and more young sewers on the horizon!!

Handmade rocks… so keep on stitching!

Your site is an inspiration! Thank you so much.

I’m curious to see how other people organize their sewing spaces, tools, projects, etc. Sometimes I feel a little overwhelmed by all my odds ‘n’ ends of things swirling around my space.

Here is to your continued success in 2009!

I love everything about SMS!! THANK YOU so much for sharing so much for those who are eager to learn all they can!! The tutorials are wonderful for visual learners like myself and the links are great also. I just watched the link for the Jinny Beyer hand sewing and learned more in 15 minutes than I could have ever read in one of my many quilt books. Thanks so much!

  12. Peggy says:

I would like to see another women’s sewing month – dresses? tops/blouses? Or seasonal theme – spring sewing?

  21. Deborah says:

Loved the tutorials on any subject. Even if I didn’t make what was offered it was interesting to see what was on your website. Thank you for providing this great service.

  22. Erin says:

The sew along was fantastic!!! I absolutely loved it. Thanks for making sewing so accessible and understandable for so many of us!

  23. lvanderb says:

SMS has helped me see all the resources for us creative types on the internet – the tutorials have been wonderful!

I’ve been sewing since I was a teen – but tied to patterns… this has been very freeing!

I loved the quilt month as well, and think themed months are a great idea – of course, let’s see… hmmmm, what would be nice would be if we could post a request for something we cannot find a tutorial for online and one could be created – sort of a tutorial by request.

    Just a thought.

    Thanks so much!

  24. Gretchen says:

Thanks for all your help and inspiration this year. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for ’09!

  25. Sharon says:

I love your blog and made my first quilt last year. I designed the pattern and made it king size! It took me almost the entire year and I would not have even considered it if not for you. So I would love another quilt month! This year, I plan on making a baby quilt and a quilt for my daughter. Thank you again!

  26. Julia says:

I would love to see a july giveaway day!! And of course, I LOVE your handmade holidays in November/december! Fantastic!!

  27. Annmarie says:

I’ve really enjoyed sms this past year, I think handmade holiday is the icing on the cake, I love all of the great gift ideas.

I’d like to see an apron sew along. I’ve seen so many comments the past year on various forums and blog that people want to make aprons but never do. I like the idea mentioned above of organizing the sewing space, I know I can use more ideas and am constantly rearranging!

Thanks for a great blog sms!!

  28. min says:

I love how you ask what we want to see. How cool. For me personally, I’ve become a teeny bit interested in embroidery. There are so many cute patterns to follow out there and I actually have my 5 year old daughter dabble in it on the floor while I’m at the sewing machine. But I have no idea how to do anything besides up down, up down. A little stitch tutorial would be fun. A week long, perhaps?

Also…maybe link up to interesting sites for major sewing….roman shades, recovering a wing back (not a slip cover), sewing for a kids room, etc. I may not ever make those things, but I am very interested in seeing major makeovers. I watch all of the sewing that Candice does on HGTV Divine Design and it’s all just somebody sewing NEW ideas and they’re fabulous! Not obvious homemade things….but things I can do with good results. Ha…if I had any sewing talent. I can dream, eh?

I had actual visitors to my blog all because of you guys….THANKS! I think my little travel tissue tutorial got something like 300+ visitors just in December alone. WOW!

  29. Andi says:

To everyone involved in SMS, I would like to offer my heart felt thanks for changing my life! Seriously! I was a bored stay at home mum who occasionally crafted. Now I am obsessed with sewing, designing and visiting the local op shop. I know that 2009 is going to be amazing for my family because I have found my passion, which in turn makes me a happy mummy. After all a happy mummy = a happy home!
Your Blog is awesome the constant stream of inspiration is just what I needed! So please be proud of yourselves and find time to sit down, smile and enjoy that little tingle you get inside when you know you’ve done something to be happy about!!

I’ve learned SOOOOOOOOOOOO much from this blog this year. THANK YOU! I never thought that I could make a quilt, but your quilting month inspired me and I’ve made about 10 since then (and working on another now). Handmade Holidays is my favorite series so please continue it next year. I also love the “Show and Tell” type of posts you do linking to others’ crafts and tutorials. It gives me ideas and I get to admire everyone’s creations. Keep up the great work!
