Introduction ~ Amy from amy a la mode

From Beth: Amy is following her dreams, finding her own beautiful niche in a talented family of quilters and sharing her steps along the way on amy a la mode. Don’t miss her Family Quilts collection! We also have it on good authority that there will be a great giveaway soon in celebration of amy a la mode‘s one year anniversary (you won’t want to miss that either). Amy reviewed the Anna Maria Horner Socialite Dress pattern for us; stay tuned!

From Amy: I’m Amy from amy a la mode. I was raised in Kentucky, but moved to the San Francisco Bay Area with my husband three years ago. After finding myself way over-stressed and unhappy at work, I made the decision at the end of 2008 to quit my job and take some time off (only crazy people quit jobs during a recession, I know!). Since then we have traveled to Vietnam and Cambodia and I am enjoying myself working on all kinds of sewing projects and taking lots of courses at the community college. I’m considering remaking myself from a PhD scientist who worked on databases to a graphic designer, but we’ll see how that goes.

I learned how to use a sewing machine when I was in high school and made a fair amount of clothes for myself on my mother’s old Singer. Fast forward about 10 years and I had a house that needed curtains and the like, and I picked up sewing yet again, though mostly for utilitarian purposes. I was re-inspired to sew about two years ago when I walked by a local quilting shop and saw some Amy Butler fabric in the window. This was my first exposure to designer cotton fabrics — all I knew about before were chain discount stores or fancy home decorator shops — and I was totally hooked!! I wanted to sew everything, and ended up making a significant upgrade to my equipment as well (from a Kenmore to a Viking!).

We don’t have a television at our house, but there are so many great blogs to read, who has time to watch TV? I have been trying to pick up knitting, but I’m not sure if it’s going to “take.” When I’m not sewing or doing homework, I like to travel, hike, bike, go to pilates, hang out at my favorite local coffee shop, and have dinner with friends.
