Introducing ~ Mai

on August 18 | in Contributors | by | with 21 Comments

From Beth: Last month we asked you who your favorite hand stitching experts were and so many of you told us: Mai! Mai stitches everything by hand, from clothing and sashiko to book covers and bags. She shares lots of tutorials on Flickr (we love this patchwork pouch) and on her Mairuru blog. Mai is up next with a fun hand sewing project just for us…

From Mai: Konnichiwa. I’m Mai from Japan. I have a shop and my blog. I sew from my childhood and always with only my hands, I don’t use any machines to sew. Hand stitch relaxes me a lot, so I sew even my clothes by hands! I live in Yokohama, near Tokyo. I worked as a computer engineer for 7 years, then I went to Italy to learn Italian language and to eat lots of Italian dishes. I also went to California to learn English last summer. I love Japan, but I want to see many cities in the world and meet many people. I opened my shop on Etsy about one and a half years ago. The shop and my English blog brought me many friends from all over the world. Now I’m really happy to write here also. Thank you very much for whom gave me such a great occasion. Sayonara.

Awsome! My grandma is also a hand stitcher and sews her clothing by hand. She is 80+ and has been a US citizen for 50 years now. I love it when she teaches me Japanese crafts. Thank you Mai for sharing! Sometimes I wish Japanese things weren’t so trendy. I miss those long hours alone with grandma and keeping all my Japanese secrets.

    Hi Elaine,
Me too! Sometimes I cannot go to bed because of the desire to sew something.
It takes long long time to make clothing, but when I finish one, I feel always very happy (* v *)!!!!
Now I’m thinking of making Apron dress for me.

My favorite sewing is hand sewing!
I think it is relaxing, like you said and
the beauty of the stitches is timeless.

Thank you for being so generous with
    your knowledge and talents!
I can’t wait to sit down tomorrow and
sew something by hand (maybe even
    some clothing!!!!!)
