Fabric Yardage for Wedding Table Runners and Napkins

A wonderful way to add a personal touch to your wedding  reception is to  choose your own fabric for table runners and napkins.  You’ll make your tables both beautiful and memorable  with only a few hours of simple DIY effort.  When the reception is over, you can use the fabric to make a quilt, or give the napkins in sets to members of your wedding party!  (*See below for information about the beautiful table at left.)

Below are some basic yardage requirements for napkins and table runners.  Your needs may vary.

  • For the runners, we’ve assumed a 12″ drop on either side of the table.  Some people want their runners to go all the way down to the bottom of the tablecloth.  Caterers usually carry tablecloths that go to the floor as well to the chair base.  Check with them for the tablecloth length or diameter if you want your runners to match.
  • We’ve calculated yardage based on a narrow 1/4″ rolled hem.  This actually takes 1″ of extra fabric across the width and 1″ across the length.   To create the rolled hem, you fold the edge over 1/4″, then fold in over again to hide the raw edge.  We’ve included this quantity in our calculations below.
  • For a rolled hem created on a serger, you need to add only 1/4″ extra fabric to each side–1/2″ for both the width and the length.  We’ve included this in our calculations below.
  • We’ve proposed three sizes for napkins.  You might want to get out a ruler and measure your own napkins to see what these sizes would actually look like.
  • We’ve calculated yardage based on 44″-wide fabric.  If you use a 54″ or 60″-wide fabric, your yardage requirements will be different.
  • Sew,Mama,Sew! is happy to help you source fabric for your wedding!  We offer discounts on 10 continuous yards and even more off a whole bolt (15 yards.)  If we don’t have what you’re looking for, we’ll special order it for you!  Email [email protected] with your inquiry.

How great!! I am starting to make my sister a set of formal napkins and table cloth from fine linen and embroider their initial on each one.

Don’t be afraid of a serger. I bought one with out knowing anything and am able to work in well now. Just experiment. It is really fun and makes projects SO MUCH EASIER and FASTER. Everything looks professiona.

  2. Faith says:

Those are really helpful. It would be a little pricy to make lots of table clothes…. napkins might make an interesting party gift… or something.

I made some plain brown table runners for my wedding. Of course, this was before I knew how to sew, so I used heat and bond. They were no where near as pretty as the ones pictured above.
