Sally Hess from Sew Sally joined our Sew,Mama,Sew! Editorial Board in May to help us plan this month’s exciting Make It, Wear It! series. Sally teaches sewing classes and private sewing lessons in the Portland area so it’s no wonder she’s an expert at teaching on the blog too! Sally’s post yesterday about what you need in your “Garment Sewing Tool Kit” was so helpful… We thought it would be fun to offer her information about needles, marking tools, thread and pressing tools in a handy Tool Kit PDF download. Enjoy the PDF, and Sally’s interview too.

SMS: How long have you been sewing?
Sally: I’ve been sewing since I was itty-bitty, sitting in my grandma’s sewing room with the foot pedal propped up on a cardboard box. I’ve been teaching for almost as long. The first time I ever taught anyone how to sew was in the 4th grade. I’ll never forget it, we were doing a lesson on pioneers and the teachers knew I could sew and that my mom had a business teaching children to sew. Somehow I ended up teaching all the kids in my class how to sew dolls. But the dolls had dresses, because they were simple. The boys wanted to make dolls with pants and I didn’t know how to make pants for the dolls. I was mortified.

SMS: What do you enjoy about sewing? What are your favorite things to make?
Sally: I make something tangible. Raising kids and building a marriage is meaningful work and often a child will be a great example of the hard work you put into raising him, but when I sew something, I have a finished project that I can hold in my hands. Sometimes in just a few short hours. When the day has been really rough, I like to go into my sewing room for some quiet creative time. I don’t always finish something, but I put a little effort into developing myself as an artist and a maker of things.

SMS: How do you find time to fit creativity (sewing and any other creative loves) into your life?
Sally: My house isn’t as clean as it could be.

SMS: Do you have a favorite sewing tip or skill that’s made things work better for you?
Sally: See my post on the 17th of June. Just kidding…
(But really, lots of great tips from Sally to look for on June 17th!)

SMS: What’s a favorite thing you’ve made lately? Why?
Sally: My Uptown Coat by far! I am thrilled that everything about the coat ended up just like I wanted it!
