Sewn by Sylvie, La Fabrique de Vivie

Sylvie used gingham for this cute top from Stylish Dress Book, a Japanese pattern book. Learn more about Sylvie’s top on her blog!

Pattern: F top from Stylish Dress Book

Pattern Notes: Sylvie shortened the pattern to make a top/tunic instead of a dress, narrowed it on the sides and cut the sleeves on the bias (we love the bias-cut sleeves!).

    In response to sookhyun:

I only own the first one, but from what I’ve seen the other Stylish Dress books have a variety of items with different levels of “difficulty” required. For the most part, they aren’t too complex. I like the fact that many garments work in woven, natural fiber fabrics–not the case for many of the big US pattern companies. With some sewing knowledge, and having read the experience of others online to help with translation & tips (ie. add 1cm seam allowance), I’ve found the pictures are pretty instructive. Kind of like figuring out origami instructions–takes a bit of study for the “ah ha!” moment, but then it all makes sense.

The ISBN for SDB #1 is 9784579111855. The Stylish Dress books can be found through various online sellers or brick & mortar Japanese book stores (ie. Kinokuniya) or sometimes Japanese markets with a good book section. Etsy seller Pamadour24 (http://www.etsy.com/shop/pomadour24) is another source I see mentioned often.

  6. Lark says:

The Stylish Dress Book series (there are now 3 of them) is great! Lots of very wearable dresses, blouses and tunics. Some very inspirational examples can be found here: http://makesomething.ca/japanese-dress-books/. There’s another version of F that had a bit of “compromise” when the sewist didn’t realize seam allowance needed to be added to the pattern…
