Sew Beautiful Blog Tour & Giveaway

on August 10 | in Contests & Giveaways, Products | by | with 320 Comments

We’re excited to be a part of the Sew Beautiful magazine blog tour today! Sew Beautiful magazine has been in publication for 23 years and has always celebrated a love of fine and heirloom sewing. With its pages long-graced by hand embroidery, fine laces and trims, delicate smocking, Christening gowns, and antiques, it’s no wonder there is a general misconception that heirloom sewing, with all of its finery and detail, is very difficult. But the truth is that basic heirloom techniques are really quite simple, and with the right materials, require little more than a straight stitch and zigzag stitch!

Sew Beautiful Blog Tour
In an effort to spread the word that heirloom sewing is not only doable, but relevant, Sew Beautiful developed a blog tour that features series of heirloom technique videos. Each video “class” shares a basic technique needed to complete a gorgeous women’s camisole that the editors have recreated from a vintage nightgown, which includes a sampling of these basic techniques.

The pattern is drafted from any basic tank top shape, and Sew Beautiful shares the instructions and templates needed to create this camisole in their September/October issue #132.

Sewing with Lace Videos
Today we’re hosting the “Sewing with Lace” tutorial blog tour stop. The video is broken up into two parts below:

Part 1:

Part 2:

Visit the Sew Beautiful website to join the blog tour and watch all of the videos from start to finish!

  89. Ms. Fine says:

I’d love a chance to win! I rarely sew with heirloom types of fabrics–largely from fear of the delicate fabrics and fussy patterns. But I think my skill as a seamstress has evolved enough to give it another try. This could be my inspiration to do it.

  90. MeganAnne says:

This year I sewed both my wedding dress and vail. I got to use a little hidden lace on the linning hem of the dress. I also added edge lace to the edge of my veil. I found the vintage-y lace at the flea market – something like 10 yards (maybe more) for <$5. Then I totally forgot I had it when I was sewing up the vail and made a mad run to the fabric store where I ended up buying not enough lace. When I realized this when I got ready to add the lace I was totally bummed until I remembered that I already had the perfect lace and lots of it from my flea market find. That stopped my panic attack in it's tracks and everything worked out beautifully.

  91. Carina says:

I love heirloom sewing! It’s what prompted me to take up sewing again, rather than sensible things like sewing on buttons. Nope, vintage touches and modern fabric bows all the way. Just usually not in the same piece :D My technique is a little lacking still, but I’m working on it.

  92. Lisabee says:

I’ve never sewn heirloom fabrics OR lace (beyond adding lace to the edge of weird little projects when I was a kid). I don’t always like the way it looks because sometimes it seems so fussy.. however, this top is beautiful. It’s so delicate and pretty!

  123. Melissa Ann says:

I’ve done a little heirloom sewing. A commissioned baby gown out of a beatiful shiny cotton with some simple insertion and pin tucks. I also made my twins Christening gowns: but with theirs I just relied on the beauty of the embroidered linenfabric. I was too sleep deprived to add lace or tucks!!

  137. Paula says:

Thank you for the giveaway and videos! I am a quilter, and just starting to sew garments. I would be lovely to add some of these touches!

  138. Okay I have to admit that when I saw Amelia Johanson’s cami sample it looked intimidating until I had to make it for the videos. The camera girl, SB’s art director, Shannon (who is a quilter and crafter) was so confident after filming the tour that she went and cut herself a kit to make one. Mine is half way finished thanks to the tour. Believe me when I say “you CAN do this”. We have selected a less expensive and equally beautiful lace and fabric choice for those that might still be intimidated and for those that want to give it a try without too much investment the first time. Just give it a try. Work out each technique on a scrap then go for it. Thanks for sewing with us

  139. Alice Fecskovics says:

Thankyou, Martha Pullen, for your dedication to heirloom sewing and various sewing techniques embellishing garments. It’s nice to see that nostalgia lives timelessly in our present day through appreciation of fine sewing skills.

  140. Jerry says:

I learned the basics of heirloom sewing when my granddaughter was born in 2005. It was love at first stitch! Thank you for being part of the SB blog. I was fortunate to attend the Martha Pullen School of Art Fashion in Feb.2008 and take the Intermediate Heirloom School with Lynne Holyoake from Australia. If you have not taken advantage of the school, you MUST! Most people don’t really understand that the techniques are not hard to do; rather just time consuming and a bit tedious sometimes.

  141. Elisabeth says:

Heirloom sewing reminds me of my Aunt Mary who’s needlework and embroidery books I inherited. I would love to add lace to my repertoire. I am a huge fan of delicate, feminine and vintage looks!

  142. Cyrena Downing says:

“Sew Beautiful” Magazine is my favorite!!! I have been subscribing since 1991, and I have always anxiously held my breath every other month in antication of the magazine’s arrival in my mail box (that’s a looooong, long time for one to hold one’s breath — almost twenty years!!!). Anyway, I still have all those issues, and have sewn many an outfit and project out of “Sew Beautiful”. Thanks so much for almost twenty (breathless) years of lovely, beautiful, cute, “whimsical”, bi-monthly delights … “Sew Beautiful” Magazine is definately “eye-candy” for an Heirloom Sewer’s soul!!!

  143. Krystina says:

What a treat! This is an amazing prize, thanks for the chance to enter.

  144. Corinne says:

  149. Susan Spiers says:

I luv Sew Beautiful magazine! My first attempt at heirloom sewing was for my granddaughter’s 1st Communion. Everyone was thrilled with how it turned out!
