Shannon from has been hard at work finding the best-of-the-best for our Handmade Holidays series this year. Her tutorial round-ups are legendary, and she’s creating a great community for sewists on her site. It’s full of fun resources and Shannon’s great, can-do approach to everything. We’re so excited to introduce you to our new Sew,Mama,Sew! Board Member, Shannon! Enjoy her interview today…

Sew,Mama,Sew!: How long have you been sewing?
Shannon: I’ve been sewing for a year and a half. I got hooked by the sewing bug when I first started blogging and got inspired by all the wonderful projects I was seeing on a daily basis.

SMS: What do you enjoy about sewing? What are your favorite things to make?
Shannon: The ability to visualize a project and make it happen without any rules. I’m hopelessly addicted to refashioning & repurposing items in my home. Looking at something in a whole new light & changing it’s purpose is so thrilling & always a fun creative challenge!

SMS: How do you find time to fit creativity (sewing and any other creative loves) into your life?
Shannon: I try really hard to grab it when I can. Whether it’s 6:30 a.m., 11:30 p.m. or even 2:00 a.m., if I’m up and the kids or hubby don’t need me I’m either happily sewing, blogging or knitting. I try really hard to get at least one of those things done each day.

SMS: Do you have a favorite sewing tip or skill that’s made things work better for you?
Shannon: Invest the time and energy into making a happy space you can create in. Design it to be as easily accessible as possible (without dangering the kiddos) so that when you get a chance to sew you can just sit down and get to it. Time is valuable. I recently got rid of our dining area to make way for a new small sewing wall that’s all mine. It’s now precious real estate in my home. It didn’t cost a lot and it sure has simplified and improved my life. Just because sewing may be a hobby for a lot of us doesn’t mean we don’t deserve a special spot, even a little corner to find time to do what truly makes us joyful. It’s worth it.

SMS: What’s a favorite thing you’ve made lately? Why?
Shannon: The latest fave thing I’ve made is my daughter’s backpack for her first day of preschool. It was a project that I wasn’t sure was going to turn out due to me adding a lining inside (it wasn’t in the tutorial). It was also one of the first items I made that I got to use my new sewing labels on. It was exciting seeing her go to school with a bit of homemade love with her. She also chose the fabric and helped me to make it.

SMS: Can you tell us a little more about yourself?
Shannon: I’m a wife and also a stay-at-home mom to my 3 yr old daughter and new baby girl, happily living near the ocean on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. I’m currently learning how to sew (and show you how too), figuring out html (yuck – can we say headache!), crafting (when I have time), parenting (when my 3 year old isn’t throwing tantrums), cooking (when I’m not breastfeeding on the couch), keeping the dreaded laundry pile down (don’t you just love laundry?… Not) and coffee in my system (definitely a necessity) all while sharing it with the world on my blog Come say “Hi!”
