Heather from {House} of A La Mode is sweet, fun and has a great dive-in, can-do attitude about her sewing which makes her incredibly successful! Hot on the heels of her latest Pillow Talk Swap, Heather’s helping us plan all things pillow for February here on the blog. Heather’s one of our latest board members, working hard behind the scenes here at Sew,Mama,Sew! Enjoy her interview, check out {House} of A La Mode, and stop by later this afternoon for another great board member interview!

Sew,Mama,Sew!: How long have you been sewing?
Heather: Ha ha! I thought maybe forever, but it turned out (when I looked back to the opening of my Etsy shop) it’s just been over three years! Who knew?! Turns out though, I tend to get a little more than enthusiastic about my “likes” (not really, I get manic over all my favorite things… all the time!); it just so happens this one (sewing that is) strolled through my life around three years ago and I just simply ran head into it.

SMS: What do you enjoy about sewing? What are your favorite things to make?
Heather: Well… I truthfully admit it’s the colors– of the fabrics! Man, I’m just a junkie over fabric colors, combinations and designs. At first I needed to put them together so badly (and quickly) I made patchwork rag quilts as fast as I could! After making about 700 (thank the sweet lord someone else loved them enough to buy them!) I simmered down and started taking more time and thought into with my projects. Then I chose my patterns with a different attitude. In my land, I couldn’t consider it a victory (against the imaginary crafting warlord) unless I took the colors I loved and threw them into a design I had yet been challenged by. I guess, that’s why I LOVE making pillows so much… They allow me instant gratification with more challenging techniques. Name the traditional quilting pattern and I’ll show you one fabulous modern (spin off) pillow!! I’m a bit of an addict with them, really.

SMS: How do you find time to fit creativity (sewing and any other creative loves) into your life?
Heather: Ha! This has always been such a mystery to me (in the case of others mind you). My answer is quite easy: my two children attend full time school, which tends to leave me and my hobbies together for, let’s say, seven hours a day to play together! After that though it’s bye-bye… My eyes are shot (weird, right?)! Who are these kids who do all their sewing at night?… Only my HEROES, that’s who!

SMS: Do you have a favorite sewing tip or skill that makes things easier for you?
Heather: Yeah… Actually, I totally do! Just dive in! I have heard (more times than I could express) that someone was intimidated by a project and had yet to do it, let alone try it!… Always putting it on the ever-long to-do list (sad face). Get gone with that thinking peeps! One stitch at a time is how every quilt and craft goes together, with a sprinkling of courage! Don’t get me wrong, half-ass crafting is strictly not allowed (I’m a complete perfectionist), but never get intimidated by the complexity of a project. That’s how I slayed the Cathedral Windows Pattern! Now that’s one scary pattern (until I read the directions and laughed in its face! Ha!) Seriously though, I’ve said this before, “Just grab your big girl panties (or boy) and school those patterns…” That’s how I roll and it really hasn’t failed me yet.

SMS: What’s a favorite thing you’ve made lately? Why?
Heather: Now this is a tough question. It’s a bit like choosing my favorite color. Kidding aside (it’s blue), I truly do try to push my skills a little farther with each project, which results in me being a little more satisfied with each new one. I did just make a very cool English Paper Pieced Friendship Star pillow for a dear friend in England. Yeah… It rocked!

SMS: Can you tell us a little more about yourself?
Heather: Okay. As a crafter: I am in this industry to play and meet like-minded folks who enjoy my hobby… A girl’s girl, an utter smartass, a generation X child and proud of my alternative roots, a rebel, loyal, a giver, a person who looks forward to seeing each and every day knowing it’s going to be a surprise, a dreamer, and in the end of the day… A lady friend to all my kids!

As a person: I am a devoted wife to an admiring husband, a mother to two sons (one with autism who shows me more wisdom then 98% of the world & one who just scored his mom an Honor Student sicker for the back of her car with his 4.0 GPA!), a cheerleader for those who don’t have one, an outspoken broad who shouts LOVE and understanding from my soul, an artist and completely content with just being me. Hi.
