Hi Pat, I understand your concern for your personal printing and paper costs, but I think designers have to be able to pay themselves for the amount of work they put into these patterns, as you can see by the tutorial. Pattern drafting is an art let alone grading, which is a science! I’m a fashion designer/ drafter, and the fact that Carla has figured this out on her own initiative is incredible. Unless these PDF’s were being produced on mass, small companies won’t survive unless customers like us support them. I’m happy to support small local business, even if it means paying a bit more for it. Carla,I greatly respect your work, and your creative process. Thanks for sharing your hard earned knowledge.

This is a fabulous idea! I love being able to download and print a design from my favorite blogs. I am very eager to learn how to make a pdf pattern of my own? Question: are there other formates out there besides pdf which work well?

Just a comment…I would like the designers to consider, that while they have put an extensive amount of time into the development of the pattern,their cost is greatly reduced when selling a PDF pattern. As the purchaser of that pattern we have it immediately. however, our cost has increased greatly due to printing (ink and paper cost). I have always been a bit upset and felt that the PDF file should be sold at a bit less that designer printed pattern. Patterns are very expensive today and to have them printed at a publishing house or printers is costly, the designer is making a much larger profit that should be passed on to the purchaser..Ok so much for my soap box today…I do buy PDF’s, many many but still feel a bit cheated….Have a great day!!!!

I’ll suggest the digital tutorial to my sewing instructor so we can all work on the same projects together. I’m super excited!!! I can’t wait to start.

I’m looking forward to this. The one thing I dislike about pdf’s is lining up all the papers I have to print to get a good pattern. My favorite pdf pattern was one that fit on one page! Leather slippers for my kids.

Love the cardstock idea above. I also wanted to add that PDF patterns are where the Amazon Kindle shines. I’m able to transfer the entire PDF file to my Kindle with the USB cable. I only have to print out the actual pattern pieces. Then, I have my Kindle sitting right next to the sewing machine so I can follow along with the instructions!
