Shelly Figueroa and Karen LePage, co-owners of the ever-popular Patterns by Figgy’s sewing patterns, created the book I’ve been wishing for ever since my son was born almost six years ago! Their new Sewing For Boys has 24 projects to create a handmade wardrobe, with full-size patterns included for all of the clothing pieces. Everything is in here, from pants and pajamas to jackets, shirts and rompers for the little guys. Sizing goes from three months to seven years, and the clothes take you through all of the seasons (Swim shorts? Check! Coat? Check!)
My son and I eagerly looked through the book when it arrived and he had a huge wish list by the time we were done. I, too, want to make every piece of clothing in the book. Really. Every clothing pattern in the book. They’re all solid designs– Classic, with well thought-out details and clean lines.
Two-In-One Jacket + Little Heartbreaker Pants on the left, Just-Like-Dad Flannel Robe on the right.
Shelly and Karen give great tips throughout the pattern instructions, and construction is easy. As mentioned in the book introduction, while the patterns are categorized by difficulty anyone can sew the items in the book; the patterns are highly accessible and a pleasure to sew.
Short Sleeve Raglan Tee (with Long Sleeves) + Treasure Pocket Pants on the left,
Luka Hoodie + Little Heartbreaker Pants on the right.
Two points I want to emphasize: I really feel the book is a tremendous value. You get quality, full-size patterns to sew up an entire wardrobe appropriate year-round for at least seven years! Also, the book, while a huge BIG deal for those of us who love to sew for the boys in our life, is also completely appropriate for little girls. My daughter is almost one and her wardrobe will benefit for years from this book! I see lots of cute rompers, hoodies, pants and raglan tees in our future.
Goodnight, Sweetheart PJs on the left,
Pauley’s Pullover, Kickin’ Back Sweats + Race Car Playmat on the right.
For now though top on my son’s list was the Two-In-One Jacket (next up: Just-Like-Dad Flannel Robe and Goodnight, Sweetheart PJs for a cozy fall). We got the book right before a packed weekend but with a great pattern and Shelly and Karen’s clear instructions the jacket only took about three hours to cut, sew and model!
I was intimidated by welt pockets but they seemed simple with the guidance in the book (and my son and I felt like they “made” the jacket).
Welt pocket? No problem!
Our version has Dad’s old, felted sweater as the lining and patch pockets on the inside, reused from Grandpa’s old corduroy shirt. Buttons from Great-Great-Grandma’s stash give the jacket an extra little touch of family love. With his name sewn inside he’s ready to greet kindergarten in style.
Ready for fall with some handmade goodness to keep him warm at recess.
