We’re way overdue for one of Melanie’s gorgeous collections of recent sewing trends! When she isn’t stopping in here, you can always find Melanie on her fun blog, A Sewing Journal, and find her on Twitter and Facebook. Enjoy today’s dose of holiday color from Melanie! What are you sewing for the holidays?

In this special holiday version of my Sewing Trends post, I thought we’d look at the colors of Christmas. Here are some newer colors, and some long-time favorites, the handmade community has embraced this season.

Grey has quickly become a favorite color in year-round sewing and we’re seeing it pop up in holiday sewing as well. Clockwise from top left: Oh Christmas Tree Mini by Stitched In Color, Christmas Stars by Diane {from blank pages…}, Christmas pillow by s.o.t.a.k. handmade, Felt Christmas Tree Decorations by littlenestbox, Fussy Cut Quilted Coasters (tutorial) by Gwenny Penny.

Pink is always pretty as a color for the holidays. Clockwise from top left: Wonderful window display by ModKidBoutique, Bright Pink Pom Pom Christmas Ornaments by littlenestbox, Christmas Embroidery (tutorial) by Striped Feather Company, Patchwork Table Centre by shellybeana.

Bright green is so cheery and looks so fresh! Clockwise from top left: Holiday Surprise Reverse Applique Pillow by Fussy Cut for the book Pretty in Patchwork: Holidays as found on Quilt Dad, Patchwork Stocking (tutorial) by Striped Feather Company, Christmas Table Runner by shellybeana, Fractured Christmas Star by quilt jane.

I’ve been seeing unexpected colors popping up in holiday sewing, mostly versions of orange. Clockwise from top left: Christmas Stockings in grey, gold and white by rikrak, Scrappy Stockings (from a tutorial by Stumbles & Stitches) by imagine gnats, Santa Baby (from a tutorial by Prudent Baby) by Sew Delicious, Countdown-To-Christmas Advent Calendar from the book Pretty in Patchwork: Holidays by Miss Print, Christmas Stockings by Libie Peterson Designs.

Aqua and red is a favorite combination of many in the handmade community and lends itself wonderfully to holiday projects. Clockwise from top left: Christmas Table Runner by coco stitch, Candy Cane Love Paper Pieced Pattern (plus mini tote bag tutorial) by verykerryberry, patchwork stocking by Going Sew Crazy, Embroidered Snow Angel by SeptemberHouse, Quilted Stripes Christmas Pillow (from tutorial) by Maureen Cracknell Handmade.

Well-loved, red and green will always be a part of many Christmas sewing projects. Clockwise from top left: Now and Zen Christmas pot holders (made from the book 100 Pretty Little Projects) by Stumbles & Stitches, Countdown To Christmas quilt by Diary of a Quilter, Three Tomter by thundymac, Christmas Red and White Skirt with Green Bow by The Pink Olive Designs, Patchwork Tree Ornaments (tutorial) by she can quilt.
