Giveaway Day Wrap-Up

on May 24 | in Contests & Giveaways | by | with 74 Comments

Giveaway Day (Week!) was a hit once again with a total of 586 giveaways! There were some incredible prizes, really fun blogs to visit, tons of goodwill and lots of generosity. We hope a good time was had by all!

As always, we’d love your feedback. How can we improve our next Giveaway Day (in December)? Please don’t comment with opinions about individual giveaways or the type of items people choose to give away; we love the Giveaway Day spirit of sharing, kindness and connection.

Please note:

  • All giveaways must close May 25 at 5 p.m. PST, and winners should be announced by email no later than Sunday, May 27 (please also update your Giveaway Day post to include the winner’s name).
  • Ship your item by June 1.

Thank you– We can’t wait to do it again!

This was my first time participating in the giveaway. It was so fun! I didn’t get linked up until Thursday but still had a wonderful response.
The comments left here on this post are so helpful for next time. I will definitely consider making some changes.

  2. Jacque says:

Many thanks to the SewMamaSew team, for a fabulous week of fun! I know that setting up a large giveaway on one blog is pretty intense, so I know that organizing this week had to be brutal! Thank you so much. :)
I made new friends, found new blogs to follow, added followers at my own blog, and love the linky set up! I find Rafflecopter a bit daunting sometimes, so I don’t use that – I also gave people the OPTION to follow if they wanted. Not mandatory. I had great response….almost 800 comments!
Looking forward to the next time!! Thanks again. :)

  3. Thank you Sew Mama Sew for another great Giveaway WEEK!

  4. I hosted my first ever giveaway as a result of the SMS giveaway and I am delighted to say that everything went very smoothly. I had several comments from no-reply bloggers, which were frustrating, as I aimed to respond to every comment received, but other than that no problems.

Thanks for hosting this giveaway I will definitely be back participating in the next one!

  5. Kathy says:

Why not do one giveaway that everyone who wants to (along with the one on their website) contributes to? And make it a requirement that to win it you must comment on each website…

Because, well, its pretty dang good the way it is already. I picked up 5 new blogs, lol. Which I think is part of the point for most of the blog participation.

    Thank you for doing this!

  6. Debora Kerr says:

This was the first time I visited SewMamaSew and all the other amazing blogs. I even won two prizes! Thank you so, so much for running this event. I loved discovering creative people, especially those who I could follow on FaceBook or Pinterest.

  7. PJ says:

Thank you Sew Mama Sew for hosting the the giveaway. It was great fun to participate on both sides of the giveaway.

    1. Turn off your blog comments verification – even if only for the giveaway time period.
    2. I don’t want to have to jump thru hoops to participate in the giveaway. I don’t want to Twitter about you and your giveaway, I don’t want to LIKE you on Facebook, or join your Pinterest list. I just want to see and read your blog. I’d like it to be my choice if I want to “Follow” your blog and I would rather I didn’t “have to Follow” in order to win.
    3. A full seven days would be better for the giveaway – that way the weekend would be included sometime during the giveaway.
    4. Please, bloggers enter your blog in only one catagory.
    5. Maybe have the Giveaway catagories spread out over the month. I realize this is more work but the various giveaways would be spread out.

    Thanks

  8. Thank you Sew Mama Sew! If everyone followed your directions, both giver and winner – it worked very smooth.

  9. Omee says:

I enjoyed participating in the giveaway. Was fun!

  10. Lee says:

Thank you for hosting the giveaway “day” , for the advanced notice of the dates and although I think there are always some glitches – I Loved it as always and found some great blogs to follow and some cool tutorials. Last year I did not “win” anything but this year I did! very exciting and a great idea! thanks again!

  11. chibidani says:

I’m going to echo what a few other people have said. Most of these are comments to the blog owners, as opposed to you guys here at SMS.

    1) Word verification is annoying when visiting over 300 blogs.
    2) I DO NOT want to have to become a follower to enter your contest. I will choose to follow if I like what I see.
    3) There were a few that linked to a blog, but then from that blog I had to go to facebook to enter. I do not use facebook because it is such a big time-sink. It also makes me lose interest in that person’s blog.
    4) A few people listed in the International area, when it was only open to US.
    5) Living in Canada, I wonder if there should be a category for “Will only ship to (insert country here)” and then have the blog owner enter their country, and the listing here show it. I hope to participate next time by giving something away – one to international, and one to only Canadians, and would like to be able to show that.

  12. Inky says:

Thanks for organizing this. I’m new to sewing and this was a fantastic way to find new blogs! Though the more blogs I find, the less time I have for the sewing part :)

My only comment is that there were lots of giveaways I couldn’t enter b/c I don’t have a blogger account or an open-ID. I realize that has nothing to do with you, but it’s something worth mentioning to participants next time round. It was so frustrating to read through a post, find something you really wanted to try for, put in a comment, and then be unable to post it.

This happened on about half the sites, and made me feel like unless I was already a blogger, this giveaway wasn’t for me – I couldn’t enter the giveaways, and, now that I’ve discovered these blogs, I already know I can’t participate and comment in the future. Which makes me far less likely to keep reading those blogs.

  13. Carmen says:

Let me start off by saying that I love Giveaway Day! You do an incredible job getting the word out and each time you host this it gets even better. Here are some comments I have:

It would be nice if people were able to somehow indicate in their Link what Country/countries were applicable. I saw a couple that were non-US in the international section (I understand that, but I almost missed their requirement). I also saw some int’l posted in US-only – I think they just went to the bottom of the page. At that point, having the separate sections doesn’t really help.

Eliminating duplicate giveaways would be another great improvement – there were some that had the same giveaway (item) under multiple categories) and I almost entered twice.

Word verification is annoying – but I realize that is the blogger’s prerogative and not under your control.

I wasn’t able to enter until Friday (5/25) and ran across at least 1/2 dozen that ended before 2pm PT. I would have understood those that were overseas, but most of these were US-based.

Thanks for having SMS Giveaway Day!!

  14. Delorise says:

Just wondering if any winners have been picked yet. I am excitedly checking my email and none yet. I hope I blogged right so my email showed up. thanks again for all the fun.

  15. Kathy says:

This was my first time participating in this giveaway event and it was awesome! I saw lots of increase traffic to my blog, and from there to my Etsy shop. And so many kind comments as well. I’ll definitely do this again! Thanks for doing such a great job of hosting it for us!

  16. Dottie says:

Thanks for setting up a fun project! I enjoyed seeing so many new blogs and the ideas on them were great.
I’m back in a crafty mood. thanks!

  17. Jocelyn says:

Loved the Linky. Did not like the Word Verification. Takes way too much time. It also seems to me that some of the blogs were listed the same item in two categories. Sometimes when I visited a blog it looked like one I had already entered, but I was not sure, because there were hundreds of comments ??!!? Anyway, it was a another great Giveaway Day. Thanks for hosting.

  18. Dianna says:

Wow, Thank Sew Mama Sew that was loads of fun!!

    Until the next time…

    Dianna

  19. Whitney Baze says:

I want to start by thanking you and everyone that listed a giveaway. I know these things take a while to put together. Here are some things I noticed, I apologize for repeats:
    1. I lobe the linky idea, however, I noticed when I came back to the page, they weren’t in the same order. I has to continually scroll through, trying to remember where I’d already entered so I wouldn’t disqualify myself by responding twice.
    2. Finding items listed under incorrect headlines. I was checking out the baby/kids stuff and found cradt materials.
    3. Give anyone donating a deadline to link up. Finding time to continually check the giveaway day post for new additions PLUS the problem I mentioned in my first point, I probably missed or skipped a lot of great blogs and giveaways.
    3. Blogs that were requiring you to follow their blog, facebook, twitter, pinterest, etc before entering. This takes a LOT of time and something I know you specifically mentioned in your rules post. I skipped a lot of giveaways because my computer time is limited with 2 children to take care of. I don’t mind being asked to follow a blog whose content I would enjoy, usually I will do so without a giveaway.
    4. If they would be willing to turn off the text cerification, it’d be lovely. I understand the need, but using something like Rafflecopter seems like a better option.

Again, these are only things I encountered and are not complaints just suggestions to possibly help. I loved the chance to enter where I was able to, only looking back now, wish I would have had the time to enter more.

  20. Whitney Baze says:

I love that so many blogs were willing to donate. I know this takes a lot of time for both you and them to make possible. I’m glad that I had a chance to enter a few.
Here are some suggestions that might help, I apologize if they’ve been mentioned previously:
    1. The biggest annoyance was finding items linked under the wrong catagory. I had no intention of looking in the bags area, but checked anyway to find materials giveaways etc.
    2. Have a deadline for those providing items. I have young children and finding a chance to continually chwck back to find any new postings became too tideous and I’m sure I missed discovering lots of interesting blogs.
    3. Holiday weekends don’t work for everyone. We’re an EMS/Fire family so holidays don’t work the same for us, but I know a lot of people that won’t be able to respind if they win because they will be out of town. A few even by-passed the fun completely to be with their families.
    4. There were several blogs that still posted that you meeded to follow their blog, facebook/pinterest, etc to be eligible. Yes, for large, open giveaways that are provided by a sponser (KitchenAid, Plaid, etc), yes, it makes sense. They’re doingbit as marketing. For those vendors that required “liking” or “following” something other than their blog to enter, I skipped. Npt because I don’t want to keep up with them now, but because clicking link after link is annoying. Please use something simple like Rafflecopter to help out.

  21. mandy at eight is enough says:

i agree with the word verification…i got that many wrong it was crazy…i swaear some of the were right too…lol…but, honestly, i had a great time…i have never heard of sew mama sew nor of the gieaway but i had a ball…i am a novice at sewing but visiting the hundreds of blogs was such an inspiration i am going to get my machine out and tackle some bigger things besides toys and bunting…thankyou thankyou…xxx

  22. Madelyn says:

I only happened upon this the other day, and had so much fun taking part (both entering/finding new blogs to love and hosting a giveaway on my own blog)

    What a great idea.
Thank you for setting this up :)

  23. Pam Coetzee says:

Hi, I”m Pam from Durban, South Africa, like Penny I Would to try the templates. Would like to see more in the hoop projects too. Where can I order online plastic or resin templates, I cant find them here in Durban, we only have 4 quilting shops and they are also out of stock. I love your website, Thanks,
    kind regards,
    Pam

  24. Donna says:

Special thanks to the folks at SMS.

Fantastic job of coordinating…again. This was my 3rd time participating. I received more comments on my giveaway this time than last. And a few signed up to receive my blog via e-mail.

I even had time to enter the contests for about 25 blogs. And I already won one prize. I am so excited!!

Ditto on the comments about word verification. Though I can usually figure out the letters, it is still time consuming. One site had a very long post about negative stuff going on in their life. I backed out. Didn’t finish reading it all and didn’t leave a comment. I have enough drama in my own life.

Overall, I still enjoyed the whole process. Thanks again for hosting.

  25. leah says:

Thanks… What a wonderful week of fun!

  26. Lindsay says:

Thanks for another wonderful giveaway day! I don’t think I’d change anything on your end for next time. I really liked that the giveaways now last 5 days, I think that gave ample time to be able to enter all of the ones you wanted to. I also liked that you gave the participants some guidance on how to host their giveaways (like people don’t want to have to be followers, etc.). The links and thumbnails were also very helpful. My only suggestions for next time would be for the people hosting giveaways – turn off word verification, only list the giveaway under one category, etc.

  27. Annie says:

Love the link up system and the week long event! Now if I could just win something for once, it would be perfect. :-)

  28. Anya says:

I could not figure out the whole rafflecopter thing and just gave up on those ones.

  29. diane says:

Just wanted to say thank you to SMS for the amazing working putting this giveaway together! This is my first time, both entering and having a giveaway, and it was so fun to read the comments on my blog and to enter all the giveaways everywhere.
Thank you again! I’m excited for December!

  30. I was one of the people who posted under international and usa only….it was a goof-up on my part (new to this) and I apologize…..tried to remove one and it didn’t work…requested the site people remove it but it stayed….may be that it can’t be removed once it’s there….at any rate…..I am sorry I goofed….I did put a note on my blog that I would take Canadian and European entries….it was the best I could do to fix it….next time will be more experienced (and careful)….Lots of nice entry comments! Some even tried to help me fix it…!! Thank you to them! It was fun!

  31. Thank you for hosting this wonderful Giveaway Day week. And thanks to all the generous participants. I enjoyed checking out so many wonderful items and blogs. I’ve subscribed to quite a few new ones. I was inspired over and over again. Next time around I hope to be participating with my own giveaway.

  32. Delorise says:

Thanks for a great time. I spent hours reading and posting on blogs. I have never done that before. I just hope I win something. There was some really great items.

  33. Sandra says:

Thank you for the HUGE amount of work that obviously goes on behind the scenes to put these giveaways on – I enjoy surfing around finding new blogs to read, and crossing my fingers to win a prize or two. I love that the giveaways are arranged by those who ship internationally, and those who ship within the States, but I did notice a lot of bloggers that signed up for the “will ship internationally” section but will only ship to the States – that’s a bit disappointing. There were still quite a few giveaways open only to Facebook or blog followers – not everybody does Facebook, and it does seem rather “needy”. Other than that, though, this has been a BLAST!

  34. Jamie B says:

Oh, one more thing: I liked the giveaways where the blogger told me a little about themselves, but not their entire life story or a mile-long scroll through their work. And as a giveaway-er, I quickly got tired of the lame comments that you could tell were just someone trying to get something free and they didn’t really care who you are or what the prize is.

  35. Jamie B says:

    1. Word verification is SO annoying – it’d be great if people could turn it off. I typed so many nonsense words this week. :) Rafflecopters may be less stress for the person running the giveaway, but they are often incredibly buggy and slow.
    2. I think that it may help if “fabric” were its own category. There were SO many giveaways of fabric (and I loved them all), and the other supplies kinda got lost in the shuffle.
    3. I noticed above that some people had trouble with giveaways being posted in multiple categories. Some of that was probably foul play, but some others (including one of mine) legitimately did fit both categories (mine was supplies AND a handmade bag). Maybe a category for “mixed” giveaways?
    4. I don’t mind giveaways that ask for followers. That was one of the major reasons I decided to participate – the hope of getting more followers. Of course I hope that most of them genuinely liked me, but in the craziness of the week, it’s easy to let the “oh I liked that blog, I should subscribe” fall through the cracks. Offering another entry is, I think, a good way to remind those who want to subscribe to do it. (For the record, I ran one giveaway that was only-comments-are-entries, and another one for followers.)

This was an amazing week (but soo exhausting). I’m looking forward to next time!

  36. I loved it. Glad that it went the 5 days. I was late to the game but still joined in. would not have been possible if short. Also with 500+ giveaways I think I have only made it to about 300 of them still a huge list to go will not make it to the end.

  37. shirley tener says:

    I find the word verification frustrating but understand the need for it. maybe that week or days turn it off.. thank you, it was fabulous. I had alot alot of fun and cant wait till I see if I won something and I got alot of new blogs to follow. My wrist hurts. :}

  38. It’s been a hoot. Next time I’ll plan to join in on the giveaway. Thanks

  39. Valerie says:

I agree that the word verification thing is aggravating but everything that SMS did in support of Giveaway day was spot on, the rules were clear and fair, the way everything was listed, sorted and linked was phenomenal, really excellent stuff!

  40. @pril says:

This was my 3rd time entering the giveaways and my 2nd time giving away stuff. I like the linky method, makes things more organized. I think if someone is offering things that would fit into different categories, then it should be in separate blog posts instead of all in the same one. Word verification really got on my nerves and took up more of my time to begin with. As the givers increase, it’s really like a full time job entering all the giveaways. I would like to have more time to plan prizes. I follow a blog if I like the blog, not just because I want a prize. I saw several blogs that said you had to be a follower just to enter! Blogs should make and keep it simple. My giveaways were just 1 simple comment, not hoops. I did see some giveaways that were listed under international but stated they only shipped in the USA, which didn’t bother me because I live in the US but many people don’t so it wastes their time clicking the link and reading the blog post only to find out they can’t even enter anyway.

  41. Margaret says:

This giveaway has been great fun- I found so many great blogs to follow, learned about a lot of new fabrics, patterns, techniques and ideas, and met so many wonderful crafty folk! My only suggestion would be if there were some way to track one’s entries- there were so many giveaways, I started to wonder if I’d entered already on some sites;)))). If that’s not feasible,at least next time I plan to keep a scratch pad next to the computer and keep track of the sites I’ve visited. Thanks again for the fun-now back to sewing!

  42. the sewing dork says:

I really like the new thumbnail format for entering giveaways. All the links worked well – good planning on your part. Thanks for organizing!

  43. Rhonda says:

My favorite places to enter were the ones that didn’t have a bunch of hoops to jump through! There were a few who made it complicated and I just skipped those; seemed too time consuming for only a slim chance of winning anyway. However, most did make it simple.

Also, and maybe this was my imagination, but it seemed the giveaway list didn’t always stay “in order”. As new giveaways were added, it seemed sometimes the order the giveaways were in originally shifted and I’d have to go back to see if I had already entered a certain one or not.

Thanks for the opportunity to possibly win some nice prizes and to discover some new things!

  44. Marjorie says:

I think everything was just wonderful with this giveaway!! I enjoyed it immensely. Hope I don’t miss the next one.

  45. I’m so sad I missed giveaway day! I was in Austin, TX for Renegade and didn’t see that this was coming up. :( I love giveaway day!

  46. Carole M says:

All I can say is a. this has been so much fun and b. it sucked a lot of my time this week. LOL! I have totally been introduced to some new fantastic blogs, which is great. No idea on improvements, I think this is great. Thank you!

  47. Hello!

This giveaway has been really great! Thanks so much for hosting/organizing it. One suggestion I have is to require participating bloggers to turn off word verification on their comments for the duration of the contest. When you’re going from blog to blog and entering up to 3-4 times at each one, it gets a little tiring, especially when you see this time and time again:

“The characters you entered didn’t match the word verification. Please try again.”

There’s a really great blog post here about it: http://www.funkyjunkinteriors.net/2011/09/how-to-make-your-blog-comment-friendly.html

  48. kathy h says:

I have had a lot of fun with the giveaway week. I was glad it was a week because it took a long time to look at everything. Thank you for doing this. I found some new blogs that i added to my favorites so i will have more to look at.

  49. krystina says:

I don’t have any tips on improving the next giveaway, I just wanted to thank SMS for doing such a fabulous job. I love the thumbnails and the way you organized the giveaways by category. Hats off to you, SMS!

  50. Marika says:

Loved giveaway week again and the link up makes it so much easier for all of us !
    I wouldn’t change anything !
Thanks for organizing this again :)

  51. SewLindaAnn says:

Thank you, again, for all the work that goes into this. It was phenominal. I added many blogs to my reader and would love to add more, but alas I can only read so much! Lots and lots of lovely new to me bloggers replied to my comments and I thought that was lovely. Considering that I saw many, many times that I was like comment 600 and something life in blog land was super busy for them.

I only have a suggestion because it’s gotten to where there’s so many places to visit and lots of places have multiple comment opportunities, maybe this could be done over a month or a couple of weeks instead of one week. Maybe have a category per week for a month, or something a little less condensed.

  52. Alli says:

Giveaway day was fantastic! I love the linky party way of doing things, and most people had really nice, simple entry requirements. :)

My suggestions are to remind giveaway offerers that people generally don’t like to be required to be a follower to enter; I follow people when I like what I see on their blog. Also, I don’t really like the Rafflecopter widgets; I wasn’t able to use them on one of my computers and just skipped those giveaways rather than moving to a different computer. Finally, some people closed their giveaways before 5/25 @ 5 pm PST, which made me sad when I tried to enter them this morning.

Thanks for coordinating such a fun giveaway week! :)

  53. Sue says:

The one thing that I found happening was that some folks listed the same item under several categories. I would click on the site and then realize I had already been there before. (One item was listed under International and then US only). When a blogger requested one entry only, one would have to check to see whether you had already entered. I didn’t want to disqualify myself by double posting.

This was a really fun giveaway. I found great new sites and tutorials for lots of fun things! Can’t wait for the next giveaway. I already know what I want to make to giveaway!!!!

  54. Dottie says:

Really enjoyed the oppotunity of being a part of this giveaway. It was fun getting to meet new people and hopefully actually winning some nice prizes.

    Dottie

  55. Maureen Hayes says:

This was my first time hearing about and participating in this giveaway. THANK YOU so much for sponsoring it. I have had a blast and found so many great new blogs to follow! I don’t know if I won any prizes, but the whole experience has been a gift! THANK YOU so much for doing this. I hope for the next one to be able to offer something to give away myself.

  56. kathyh says:

A giant thank you for putting this party together.
Love how the Linky thing makes it so easy to go see other blogs.
I found several I would like to read more about.

    ツ ♥ (¯`’•.¸ -¦- thank you SEW much -¦- ¸.•’´¯) ♥ ツ

  57. Ellen M. says:

My only suggestion is that maybe people should only be able to list their giveaway under one category. In a few cases the same item was listed in two categories, and by giveaway #300whatever I couldn’t remember if I had entered that one previously or not! Thanks for a great Giveaway Day (my second) – now I can go get something done!!!

  58. I love Giveaway Day-thanks so much for hosting it again!!!

I’d love more advanced warning of the dates (maybe I just missed an announcment about it though!) I happened to have a craft book I’d been sent to review and giveaway so I was able to participate even though I only saw that it was this week on like last Friday! Anyway, if we knew like a month or 6 weeks in advance, small blogs would be more likely to have time to contact sponsors/publishers/etc and get great prizes lined up or to make cool stuff to giveaway and not just be limited to what they have on hand! (But just ignore my comment if you did announce it earlier and I just somehow missed it, lol.)

  59. Sharon Fulton says:

I would like to see binding quilts topics as well as hand-sewing tricks and tips.

  60. Georgia says:

Such a wonderful idea! Thank you for sharing your talent!!

  61. JodyJean says:

This was my first time participating on the giveaway end of things. I thought it was great fun! You guys do a great job organizing and I can’t think of a thing to change! It was all very clear to me. I got some lovely comments and made some new friends, so it was worth it! Can’t wait to pick my winners :-)

  62. Penny says:

Would to try the templates. Would like to see more in the hoop projects.

  63. duff says:

Urgh! I just wrote a long message and it’s gone! Anyway, there was lots of good stuff and only one suggestion–quilt market, giveaway day (400 + entries?), and blogger’s quilt festival (over 600 entries to check out) are all at once. that’s too much! Can you agree to spread them out a little so we can enjoy all of them at a leisurely pace instead of missing half of them, linking at breakneck speed??

  64. Terri says:

    Love this tablet keeper!

  65. Mhairi says:

    I really enjoyed the giveaways.
A couple of comments: I would prefer that people got their giveaways in the right section – it is quite frustrating finding ones that don’t ship internationally in the ship internationally area.
I also find the word verification frustrating but understand the need for it.
I would like to thanks everyone involved for their generosity and for taking part in the giveaway week. This time around seemed easier to negotiate and with less hoops so thanks for the direction to the bloggers.
Once again, thanks again for organising and running this week.

  66. Amy DeCesare says:

Well, it’s not even over yet, and I’m going to give it two thumbs up! I have a new blog and am so excited by the amount of traffic this opportunity has provided. I can’t wait to see who wins my giveaway, and I had a blast entering lots of others. Such a great idea – I wouldn’t change a thing.

  67. Kathy Royall says:

    Thank you!

  68. Shankevia says:

Thanks so much for this opportunity. I can’t wait for the next one. In the mean time,I get to better my blog and do some small giveaways of my own.

  69. beth lehman says:

very fun – i’ve never participated before! over 450 comments on my blog. i think i’d rather it was 1 or 2 days, though, instead of 5!

  70. Holly u says:

Having the giveaway end on a holiday weekend may not be such a great idea. I for one will be gone camping AND away from a computer connection until Monday. I got the feeling from several posts that I had to be able to respond on Sunday if I win. If this week still works best for you, then maybe ask for posters to wait until Monday or Tuesday before choosing someone else. I had fun visiting all the giveaways, thanks for organizing them!

  71. Katie B says:

I wasn’t hosting a giveaway this time, but as someone visiting the giveaway blogs, I really liked having the linky format so I could see a thumbnail of the prizes!

  72. AppieB says:

I’d just like to say, this was awesome! I had a great time! I also found a lot of blogs to follow. Thank you for hosting this giveaway!

  73. It’d be great if people would turn off the word verification just for the week, I really struggle with the verifications words & I know others do too. If I don’t get them right the first time, I don’t try again – it’s too frustrating.
Thanks for hosting the giveaway, it’s been so much fun!

  74. Jenelle says:

Thanks for another wonderful Giveaway Day! I found some new gems to follow and had a ton of really awesome comments on my giveaway. :) Can’t wait for December!
