Kate from Kate Conklin Designs is up next with a really fun project to work on with kids. Her three year old used a similar technique to create this gorgeous quilt with Kate! We’re so excited to share the project with you… While you wait, look around Kate’s site for lots of beautiful quilts, fun projects and more. Don’t miss her PDF Quilt Patterns too!
Hi, I’m Kate from Kate Conklin Designs. It’s great to be sharing a tutorial here at Sew,Mama,Sew! I was bitten by the quilting bug a few years ago when I was given free tickets to a quilting and craft fair in Sydney. I went along with my new baby in a sling and was immediately smitten by all the gorgeous fabrics and quilts on show. Discovering quilting was almost like falling in love, and I started designing my own patterns almost immediately. I have never thought of myself as very creative– I’m much more logically minded-– but I discovered that designing quilts is actually quite mathematical. I enjoy playing around with the ‘stack and slash’ method of quilt construction; it’s a great way to get an improvisational look without cutting individual strips (as in my Wonky Donkey 2 quilt), but I also love the quiet slow process of hand quilting. I combined hand and machine quilting in my Grand Designs quilt, which I made for my sister, and I’m so pleased with how it turned out. I try to squeeze some quilting into everyday; a little bit of ‘me’ time. I live in Australia with my wonderful husband and three young children, and although I enjoy being a Speech Pathologist, I’ve found a real passion in quilting. You can find all of my downloadable patterns here.
