Sew,Mama,Sew! shop closing (truth) ~ Great new things on the way!

on April 11 | in Etc... | by | with 91 Comments

This is a bittersweet post, which requires some background and explanation.

When my oldest daughter was born, I left my job as an instructional designer at a software company, dusted off my sewing machine, learned everything I could about screen printing, and launched my own line of baby clothes called, Go,Goose,Go! After a couple of years I was working with contract seamstresses and selling to small boutiques. I was also buying fabric by the bolt, which was one of my favorite parts.

Go,Goose,Go! 2005

Go,Goose,Go! 2005

On a couple of occasions I decided not to use some of the fabric I had bought, so I sold it on my website. It was a fast and fairly easy sell since there were so few online fabric stores and demand was high. I bought a little more fabric, then a little more, until I decided to separate the fabric from the baby clothes, and Sew,Mama,Sew! was born. I loved it, but within the year it became clear that I couldn’t successfully run two businesses and raise a small child. My instincts were telling me to follow the fabric, so I sold the other business and invested in growing Sew,Mama,Sew! One of the first things I did was start a blog and hire Beth to help me with that. She’s been our awesome blog editor ever since.

Sew Mama Sew 2006

Sew,Mama,Sew! 2006

Next month marks the 8 year anniversary of Sew,Mama,Sew! It has been an amazing experience and I’m very proud of what Beth, Liz, Irene, Gabrien, and I have done. The shop has grown, the forum was launched, we’ve embraced social media and we’ve established a sizable list of newsletter subscribers. Most importantly, we’ve grown a useful and popular blog. We love collaborating with the hundreds of talented contributors who have written tutorials, led sew-alongs, reviewed patterns, and told their story. We love inspiring people to sew. As former teachers, we definitely love helping people learn something new.

Sew Mama Sew 2009

Sew,Mama,Sew! (putting a bird on it since) 2008

Even though we started the blog to support the shop, it has taken on a life of its own and running it and all the other social media is often like having a second business. I already know I can’t successfully run two businesses and be a good mama too. It’s time to follow my heart again, which is telling me to do what I’m best at—collaborating, motivating, and teaching. We are therefore going to close the Sew,Mama,Sew! shop and focus on making the blog a spectacular site for sewing enthusiasts! A new design is on the way, with cool new features and better organization. We have plans for multiple posts per day, greater reader interaction, better integration with other social media, and a cleaner look. We’re already working on new partnerships that will allow us to bring you excellent content in exciting new ways. Closing the shop is hard, but Beth and I are both thrilled about the possibilities of having a stellar site full of information, inspiration, and community. We hope you’ll stick with us as a reader, a contributor, a participant and a supporter because we certainly can’t do it without you!

Sew Mama Sew 2010

Sew,Mama,Sew! 2010

We’ll be clearing out our shop inventory starting today! ALL the fabric in the store has been marked down! Our shelves are packed full of brand new collections that aren’t on sale anywhere else, so be sure to take a look around. We have dozens of amazing fat quarter bundles, including our popular new Seeing Spots packs, the full range of Kona Cotton, brand new LibertyAnna Maria Horner linen and much more! If you have a gift certificate, now is definitely the time to use it.

To everyone who has shopped with us over the years, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! We have always appreciated your business and we’re sad to say goodbye in this way, but we’re excited about the future of Sew,Mama,Sew! and hope you are too.

  38. Becky says:

I’m so sad to hear the shop is closing – buying fabric from you guys is my guilty pleasure. I’ll still visit the blog daily, but I’ll miss getting your wonderfully packaged fabric in the mail. Thanks for everything…going to check the sale.

  40. Tracey Wirth says:

Silly as it seems I am writing this with tears in my eyes. I really do not like change, but as humans it is one thing that is always consistant!! It is very hard to wear multiple hats and also be a good mom, those precious years of mothering are something that occur for such a short time and really do impact how and what our children will become as adults! I will surely follow your blog- although I am saddened by the fact of not being able to hop ob over to sewmamasew for supplies, I will suredly stop by for sewing advice and blog posts!
Good luck to you and your team, as I am sure there will be even more exciting endeavors on the horizon!
