Kelly Bowser from kelbysews is a talented quilt designer and sewist. Do you remember her popular LOVE Mini-Quilt Pattern for our True Love series?! We love her latest quilt tutorial at kelbysews and her newest design here at Sew Mama Sew today. Kelly was inspired to make this Interlock quilt when she saw the new organic Birch Fabrics Charley Harper designs.

Her Interlock quilt pattern draws your eye to the beautiful birds, trees, ladybugs and more!

Download the Cutting Instruction PDF; you can also see cuts for each of the blocks below. Kelly made an Excel spreadsheet of the blocks for this intermediate quilt pattern to help you organize everything. This is not a beginner quilt! It’s a really fun design though, and perfect for some winter quilting.

From Kelly: I absolutely fell in love with Birch Fabrics latest line, Charley Harper! I wanted to create something that was very modern and highlighted the unique illustrations of Charley Harper. While searching online for mid-century modern furniture, I ran across a picture of an interlocking shelving system. I immediately thought of what a cool sewing project it would make!

What originally started as a table runner quickly morphed into the most complex quilt I have ever designed! Oops! This was a labor of love and I do not regret a moment of time I’ve spent plotting this so-not-for-beginners quilt! Each block is unique and I’ve tried to make assembly as fabric-efficient as possible. Each block is pictured in its disassembled form along with the cutting instructions below. Because I am assuming at least intermediate-level piecing skills, I did not write detailed instructions on block assembly. All of the pieces are squares or rectangles so from a technical standpoint, the piecing is not challenging, but there are MANY pieces. I would recommend piecing one block at a time, as I did, so you don’t get confused.

Fabric Requirements:

  • ½ yard red, yellow, dark blue, light blue and grey Charley Harper Twigs prints.
  • 10 different fat quarters of Charley Harper prints for the fussy cuts. You can use more or less depending on how much variation you would like.
  • 4 yards of white/background fabric.

Cutting Info:
All measurements are in inches.
All seam allowances are ¼” and all seams are pressed open.
Final quilt measures 78″ x 86″.
