When I first saw UPPERCASE magazine I thought it was beautiful, then my very next thought was that I had to tell you all about it! My aunt has shared the best things with me over the years, from my favorite Greek Rice Salad recipe to wonderful German art supplies for my kids. She was in town this summer and left behind four issues of UPPERCASE magazine… An entire year’s worth of gorgeous, creative inspiration.

Have you seen UPPERCASE? I might be behind the times but before this summer I hadn’t heard of this Canadian-based publication. The issues are thick. It takes me about twenty minutes to read a lot of the popular magazines out there but I savor each of these dense UPPERCASE issues for days and days. I love the experience of reading this magazine. I love everything from the way the paper feels as I flip the pages to the way it really makes my brain spark with ideas; there’s a very thoughtful flow to the pieces in each issue and I find myself in a delighted, inspired, calm space whenever I sit with the magazine.

My latest Fall Issue #19 had everything from sketches by Lisa Congdon about her love affair with Iceland to incredible looks at vintage office supplies. There was info about the fascinating work of “Paper Engineer” Lydia Kasumi Shirreff, gems and geometry inspiration and more. (Like a look at Japanese work aprons, Icelandic Handknits, vintage letterheads, geology and, well, even more.)

There’s something fascinating about a single issue of a publication that can appeal to everyone in my family on a different level. My daughter (3) loved the reader-submitted alphabets created with office supplies. My son (8) is into the troglobites and rock art. My husband is a graphic designer and appreciates the focus on typography, letterpress and studio spaces. I love everything about every issue. (My mom, incidentally, was an instant UPPERCASE superfan and can’t wait to get her hands on my latest copy.) You can see the entire Issue 19 here (click on the issuu screen or flip through with a little narration in the video link).

I’m so excited about the upcoming Issue #20! Here’s what they have to say about it at UPPERCASE:

The main theme throughout issue #20 is โ€œbroadcastingโ€. Our broad interpretation of this term includes the sharing of ideas graphically and publicly through posters, social media and public art and also encompasses amateur radio, graphic novels and collecting vintage advertising posters. To round out the issue, haberdashery, hat-making and a love of sewing notions is a pretty and crafty thread of content throughout…

You can purchase a gift subscription now and start with Issue #20. It’s a really thoughtful, impressive gift for a colleague or loved one (and a gift you deserve for yourself!). They also have a gift card option.

Here’s a trailer for the next issue, and don’t miss the UPPERCASE blog which is just full of beauty and good things. There’s a link in the right sidebar for their newsletter; they send out great info and fun stuff including free and fabulous desktop images like the one gracing my screen right now.

UPPERCASE is generously offering a giveaway copy to one Sew Mama Sew reader today (Canadian and US residential addresses only this time, please). To enter, take a look at the link for Issue #19 above, back issues, the UPPERCASE blog, UPPERCASE books OR the video trailer above and just tell us what excites you. If you already know and love UPPERCASE you can tell us about that too. We’re so excited to share this magazine with you; it really is one of my favorite discoveries of 2013.
