on May 16 | in Contests & Giveaways | by | with 35 Comments

Giveaway Day lasts through today, Friday 5/16 @ 5 p.m. PST. Have fun visiting both giveaway pages: Handmade Items + Supplies (Fabric, Patterns, etc.).

Giveaway Hosts: Please email your winner by May 18, and note the winner in the giveaway post. Ship your item by May 20.

Thank you for participating, everyone! We apologize for the inLinkz issues with the photos; we’ll come up with a system that works better for our next Giveaway Day in December. We’d love your feedback in the comments below. How can we improve Giveaway Day (Week)? (Please note that comments about specific giveaways will not be included.)

I just want to say thanks for hosting the giveaway day. I not only won TWO gifts, I found so many new wonderful blogs to follow!

Some of these comments are exactly why some of the giveaways require that you follow them in some way – it’s pretty clear that not everyone reads the post and will just comment about anything in their head.
Thank you so much for organizing this, Beth, it was another awesome giveaway week! I’ve come away from it with some new blogs to follow. I completely understand why some people want you to follow them in order to have a chance at their prize. They are doing this for publicity after all and not all of them had a sponsor donate their prize. I think it’s great if they want to link their FB page (I didn’t come across any private ones?) and visitors can choose to follow or not follow. No big deal.
There were a few giveaways listed in more than 1 category and only one or two links that were not working at all. Just a few out of hundreds is not too bad! :)

I love Giveaway day and I thought it ran smoothly. I live in Australia and find it easy to look up the world times on the internet so I know what you mean by 5pm PST. If there are blogs I know I want to go back to visit I simply take the time to follow. My one suggestion would be to not have it so close the Bloggers Quilt Festival. A week earlier would be better.

I agree. We only have 48 hrs to respond if we win & it is so time consuming & challenging to find the right email if we win. I have even more email to check now than I already did because all the contests required so many more sites to signup to. I am already subscribed to so many sewing sites as I am a sewing addict :-)

Best day of the year, definitely more participants commenting, makes it much more exciting, thanks!

  6. Thanks for hosting, it’s been amazing. I’ve loved reading the comments left by lots of new visitors to my site. Sadly, I didn’t have time to visit as many as I would have liked.

Following on from some of the other comments – I, too, wasn’t able to leave a comment in a couple of places where you had to be signed up to the ‘right’ list. And I, also, wasn’t sure when 5pm PST is. I know you’re behind us in UK, so I ran my Giveaway till midnight GMT on 17th. I thought it was better to over-run than to cut it short. (and was quicker than looking it up, working it out and possibly getting it wrong!)

I was a bit late starting (my own fault), but I shall keep my eyes open for the next Giveaway Day. Thanks, again.

    I agree!!!!

  8. Cheri says:

Only problem I had was.. I don’t Facebook, I don’t Twitter and I don’t Instagram and I don’t BlogLovin’. Some giveaway sites only offered these option to join to follow the blog. I prefer to follow via email.. that way I get the email for every post and just read right there on the blog and don’t have to go anywhere else or filter through posts etc.Make sure they offer the email option!

  9. I agree says:

A list with all the winners would be super fun! I keep checking my email and the sites that I entered at, but it is pretty dang time consuming. Perhaps there is a way, like with the ilinkz, that would be easy for the blog-stars to just input blog name and winner(s)?

  10. Debby says:

Thank you so much for running the Giveaway – I got so many great comments on my pattern and so many new visitors to my site. Thank you, thank you!

  11. Nancy Baker says:

    Love new things.

  12. Michelle Miller says:

Oops sorry I sent info twice, don’t know if I’m Arthur or Martha today!

  13. Michelle Miller says:

Love the giveaway day. I hope that there will be a follow up list of all the contributors as there are many sites I would like to visit again.

  14. Joanna says:

Because I live in a different time zone, for my post to go up on time I had it scheduled because 6am+ PST is into my bedtime (about 9 or 10pm local time) but I wasn’t sure when to schedule it because it wasn’t until “last minute” when the actual posting details went up. (This post that went up the day before: http://www.sewmamasew.com/2014/05/giveaway-day-tomorrow-2/).

Depending on the giveaway, the preparation can take some time (photo taking, write up) and I think it would be more helpful to have this information available earlier so you can have more time to properly prepare your post and make sure it can be scheduled for the right time. Obviously I can’t link it to the linkup until I get up, but the post can still be on my blog for followers to have first chance etc. And for people who are new to Giveaway Day, at least they could have a couple of extra days to prepare because they would know what to do also.

Also I found the countdown on the post confusing because it was listed to local time. It told me that the Giveaway started hours before it had because I guess it was using my clock to match up the time. I saw a few bloggers post giveaways ‘early’ so maybe they were looking at the same clock and thought it was the right time?

    /my 2cents!

  15. Barbara says:

More publicity. I didn’t know about the event until the day it started. I polled my readers, and they agreed that there wasn’t enough advance warning. One post isn’t enough. I missed it.

  16. OkiDoki says:

Oh, one more thing that I forgot to expand on – a few of them were linked to FB pages that were not public….without an account, I couldnt even see their giveaway let alone comment to win. Bummer:/

  17. OkiDoki says:

I do not have google + or facebook, and there were several entries that did not allow any other way to comment, so I missed out on them. I am sure I am in the minority, but still – even just the name/url would have been nice!

I also really enjoyed seeing a lot of people using the rafflecopter widget (had never seen it before!) but it was all to easy to forget to scroll back up and check it off that I commented. I am not sure what repercussions that has, but I know I missed a lot of them after I commented. Some people set it so that you only had to check in at the widget (not leave a comment first) – I think for the scope of this sort of giveaway, that is a great option! It is less engaging, which is why I completely understand not everyone doing it, but it certainly was the easiest:)

Lastly, I like the direction SMS is taking the giveaway. I havent been able to check it for a couple of years, being between homes, but it has changed quite a bit (not a single day; photos and the inLinkz instead of just text links). I know some people had trouble, but these changes are pretty rad:)

Thank you so much for managing these events. I think it is one of the coolest things on the internet – it really feels like a community when everyone is getting together for a single event. It must be hard work with all the logistics, and I want to thank everyone involved! :D

  18. OkiDoki says:

I agree – several were already closed well before 5pm PST. If people agree to participate, I am not sure why they are not following the rules. :/

  19. kathyh says:

I thought Giveaway Day 2014 went very well. I had zero problems getting a hold of my winners.

I didn’t have any inlinkz problems because I would have had to stay home from work all week in order to enter all the awesome giveaways. As it was, I might have gotten to 20 %.

Thank you everyone for participating and ***AMAZED THANK YOU’s*** to SewMamaSew for being the Hostest With The Mostest.

  20. Carole M. says:

I found the same thing. Even as early as last night some had already closed (Thursday evening Pacific time)

  21. Gayle Chappell says:

Beautiful fabric. I drool over it.

  22. Jennifer says:

    *It’s been fun . Thanks

  23. Sharon Smith says:

Since there’s so much confusion on whether your email shows up or not, it would be FANTASTIC to have all the winners listed here so we can check back at one place on Monday Or, I was hoping the links would still be active at least through next week to follow through on whether I won or not. This is my first time participating. What generous gifts and what a fun way to celebrate spring! Thanks for hosting!

    • Monique Atkinson says:

Yes this would be nice as I can’t seem to find who won.

  24. Teresa W says:

Whew! What a whirlwind of amazing giveaways! Everyone is awesome for being so generous, and I’m so happy to have been able to be a part. You guys have done an outstanding job!

I would love it if the print on each giveaway link turned a darker color, to keep track of which links you have already opened. That would be helpful.

    Amazing job!
    Thank you all so much.

  25. Kathleen says:

Love anything from Silly Mama Quilts!

  26. barbara woods says:

I just want to thank you for all the work that you put into this, I enjoyed every minute even when I messed up, I learned something, thanks again

  27. wendy says:

I would love a win. The Oakshott fabrics are just amazing.

  28. Steph Blair says:

I’m in the UK and no idea whe 5pm PST is! I’ve just closed mine off now as it’s nearly 8pm BST, and the next chance I get won’t be until tomorrow morning. Maybe if you come across one that’s closed early you could just let them know the time/ time difference and ask to be considered? I know I’d include anyone who did.

  29. Just me says:

It would be great if there was a way to ensure these awesome giveaways stayed ‘open’ to the date/time specified by SMS. I know it can be a bit tricky with everyone all over the globe, but there are already giveaways that aren’t open entries :-( (it is 10am PST).

  30. Have been sewing since I was 6 yrs old. That’s 66 yrs now. Just finished altering my granddaughter’s wedding dress. My 5 yr old gd, who will be visiting, wants to know if we can sew while she is here.
