Kelly of Kelby Sews teaches sewing classes and runs a blog chock full of color. Take one look at her finished quilts and you’ll see what I mean! She also runs an Etsy shop, which features her Wonky Alphabet pattern. You can always catch Kelly’s latest sewing pursuits on Instagram (@kelbysews), which is how I became inspired by her in the first place; she made boxy bags popular! Kelly’s choice quilt was bound to be lovely…
Tell us about your favorite quilt. When did you make it? What pattern did you use? What fabrics?
My favorite quilt (for now) is the Starry Eyed quilt I made in October of last year. I used a simple Saw Tooth star pattern and only used fabric by my favorite designer, Anna Maria Horner.
Have you shown it at any quilt shows or entered it in any contests?
I’ve never put any of my quilts in shows, but I have entered a few online blogger contests.
What memories or people does the quilt make you think of?
This quilt is all about what I wanted to create. It’s my selfish quilt. I wasn’t making it so a certain person would like it. I wasn’t worried about what my fellow quilting friends would say. I wasn’t trying to impress anyone. I simply wanted to create something colorful with fabrics I adored!
What do you like best about the quilt?
What I love most about this quilt is that it is simultaneously a hot mess and beautiful. Nothing really goes together, but it does. It’s a contradiction.
How did you grow as a quilter while making it?
I learned to let go with this quilt. I’m a control freak. I like things to match or be in rainbow order, but I didn’t think about any of that with this quilt. I randomly paired fabrics to make the blocks and hoped for the best. It was a great exercise in simply being creative without editing myself. I need to do this more often!
If you could make this quilt again, what (if anything) would you do differently?
I would not do a thing differently!
Where is the quilt now?
The quilt now lives in Florida with a sweet family with six kids! I met the mother when our boys were going to the same preschool and kept in touch after we moved. I knew the quilt would be well loved and cared for in this family so I have no regrets about not keeping it!
