Update: We just posted a big set of Swimsuit Sewing Tips. Check it out!

We’ve always been of the mind that July is the perfect time to freshen up our wardrobes with handmade garments. Whether we’re sewing for the heat or planning ahead, we find that the laid-back pace of the season is just right for trying new techniques, new fabrics and new patterns.  We’ve added to our pattern stash all year, and are ready to tackle both trendy new designs, as well as tried and true favorites.

We enlisted the help of one of our favorite sewists, Sara Lawson of Sew Sweetness, to select 31 patterns from 31 different designers to feature daily in July. Sara helped curate the list and asked the designers to give us the details of each of the patterns, as well as a couple of customer examples they love. The independent sewing pattern market has grown by leaps and bounds in the past few years, providing us with hundreds of wonderful choices. We hope this series will give you a manageable look at some of the fantastic patterns available, with a glimpse at the techniques, sizes and options, so you can make an informed decision which patterns are right for you. We’re sure you’ll find several new patterns to try and love!  Check back every day for a new pattern and a chance to win a copy.

Name: Bombshell Swimsuit

Brand: Closet Case Files

Description:  The Bombshell is modeled on a classic 1950′s silhouette, a style that harkens back to the golden era of flattering, sexy and modest swimsuits. The pattern includes 3 variations in 8 sizes: a gathered bust maillot, a halter neck, and a high waist bottom which you can mix and match with your favorite bikini top. Ruched on all sides and along the back center seam, the Bombshell hugs your curves while providing full (but sexy) coverage. Its booty encasing seat and skirt-like front ensure your butt is covered (literally), avoiding the dreaded 4-cheek butt-bulge of higher cut suits. Fully lined, it will keep you decent in or out of the water.

  15. Woohoo! If I don’t win I’m buying! I’m currently working on my first suit, a tankini from Jalie 3023, but was trying to find a pattern a bit more flattering for a small bust. Hmmm best tip? Walking foot! Also, I find my serger feeds knits perfectly so I usually serge first, stitch after.

  16. Tasha says:

I recently sewed two swimsuits for my daughter. There is a definitely learning curve to sewing with swim fabric, but I’m excited to try to make one for myself.

  17. I’ve been itching to sew a swimsuit but so far have not plucked up the courage…..For some reason, it seems like a really difficult thing to master.
I followed the bombshell swimsuit trials online and was fascinated! The design is fabulous and the ladies who made it created some real masterpieces.

Thank you for the great give-away!

  18. Judi B in VA says:

I have never sewn my own suit for fear of what would happen sewing on lycra. My mother did make a few suits for me as a teen though.

  19. Gemma says:

I’ve been on a knits binge lately – but somehow swimsuits seem like the last frontier. Plus it’s mid winter here at the moment. I plan to sew one for summer 14/15 though.

  20. BJMarley says:

I sewed a swimsuit when I was in college, but I didn’t love it. I sewed the bottom with the stretch going the wrong way so it wasn’t comfortable.

  21. Jane S. says:

No, I’ve never sewn a swim suit, not even for my girls when they were little. I’m…scared…of sewing with knit fabrics. I see so many patterns I’d love to make so I think I just need to actually DO IT. This swimsuit is lovely. Great classic style!

  22. Jenna says:

I have never worked with Lycra before, but I’ve been drooling over this pattern for the past year!!!

  23. Ann Christman says:

Ah, the good old days, when I could make and wear just about any two piece swimsuiti. Those days are long gone and having just bought a winter home in Florida I decided I HAVE to learn how to sew a one-piece swimsuit. I’ve already purchased a pattern and material, but have hesitated to cut it out because I wasn’t thrilled with the “matronly” look of the pattern. The Bombshell is EXACTLY what I was looking for! If I don’t win it, I’ll buy it. Either way, I win.

  24. Katie says:

I have some swimsuit material but need to find a pattern, this might be the one!

  28. Nan says:

35 years ago, when I was a teenager, I remember sewing a bikini and also a one-piece – sunny yellow with a white diagonal stripe – I had a bombshell body THEN, and could pull it off. Looking back, I’m amazed I made them. Would love to try sewing a l suit again and showing off my umm… we’ll call it “mature bombshell” self.

  29. marjolein says:

i have never tried before. Because i sew more for my kids than for myself. But i would love to try this, because i can never find the right bathing suit for me.

Looks like fun. I’ve thought about trying a swim suit but never sure of just how / ehere to start. The perfect fabric choice would get me more excited too.

  31. Michelle says:

I have never sewn a swimsuit, love the look of this one

  32. Jennifer says:

I’ve never sewn a swimsuit before, but it looks like an interesting challenge. a retro suit…even better! My few attempts at jersey and stretch fabric have been so-so attempts so far. I know a little that help me tailor things for my body, but this would give me a better insight on what I think I know.

  33. I’ve had my eye on this pattern! Being short and busty, it’s so hard for me to find an off the rack suit that works. While I’m not new to sewing I am new to shopping for excellent quality bathing suit material. I can’t wait to read more tips and tricks on where to find the good stuff.

  34. Sara says:

I have never made swimwear or worked with spandex nor lycra, I did make a scuba skirt a few months ago and struggle a bit with its stretchiness. I would love to try and make a bombshell, it looks like this year is the year of making swimsuits so if if I don’t do it for this summer, when will I?

  35. Marie says:

I’ve looked at this pattern a long time but it is difficult to find suitable fabric I like. So no experience with this kind of sewing.

  36. Tas says:

I have been sewing since I was a teenager and only started sewing stretch fabrics about 5 years ago. I am not afraid of making tee shirts anymore but swimsuits still scare the heck out of me. I feel like they are difficult and fiddly.

Love this pattern. Have been eyeing it off for months but still can’t quite come at committing to it :P

  37. Nicole says:

I have not sewn a swimsuit but I use swimsuit fabric to make workout wear. The last fabric I bought for workout gear was from fabric.com.

I’ve never sewn a swimsuit but I’d love to do this one. I love the classic style!

  39. Lynda says:

I haven’t made one yet but would love to try as I can never find one I like that fits.

  40. kate C. says:

I LOVE this swimsuit! I’ve never made one and am not sure the best place to find fabric – that seems to be the hardest thing for me for making clothes – where to find good quality knit fabric. My local store carries pretty much none of it. Maybe do a post (or refer me to an old one!!) of possible online places to buy knit and swimsuit fabrics! THANKS!

  41. Azure Rempfer says:

I’ve only made them for my 3 year old as I could never find a pattern I loved enough for me. This one is AMAZING though! I’d love to make a few of these bombshell suits for myself!

  42. Becky says:

I’ve sewn some crazy stuff, like backpacking rain gear and a wedding dress, but never a swimsuit! So I guess I should give that a shot sometime, right?

  43. Elizabeth says:

I’ve never sewn a swimsuit, I think the stretchiness of the fabric and the need for wooly nylon thread and the addition of bra cups all sounded kind of overwhelming but I really think this is an adorable suit and would love to give it a whirl!

  44. Betsy N says:

I haven’t sewn a suit before. I’ve never had much luck with clothes. They never seem to fit me in the end…then all that work feels like it was for nothing! I need to try some Indie patterns though, I haven’t tried any indie clothes patterns yet.

  45. krystian says:

I have sewn one for my daughter, it isn’t as difficult as people think! Just go slow, use an appropriate needle for your fabric and machine, and use pins!

  46. sorahart says:

I’ve sewn swimsuits for my kids but not for myself…I did just figure out I could make rash guards using my favorite tee pattern and some swim fabric though. This has been a game-changer!

  47. Miki says:

I’ve sewed two swimsuits and had a blast making them! Won’t say things went completely smooth but I definitely learned that patience is key, especially when working with stretch fabric. I would love to add this pattern to my work! So far I’ve done Burda-style’s Alison swimsuit & McCall’s 2221 vintage pattern posted in the June section of my blog. I called it the Granny Smith Swimsuit and I love it! Thanks for a chance to win!

  48. Joanna says:

I’ve never sewn a swimsuit but I would love to learn, not only for myself but I have one of those super picky (and super hard-to-fit) teenagers!

  49. kathyh says:

Haven’t sewn one for many years. I noticed fabric depot – here in Portland -had some great swim fabrics along with the elastics to complete the suit.
I’ve been eyeing this pattern – have it on my pinterest.

  50. Geni Arthur says:

Pretty! Not sure this one would be good on me, but is nice on those pictured. The pattern/design details are really helpful. Thanks.

  51. Elizabeth says:

I sewed a swimsuit for myself and one for my sister about 30 years ago. It was a very simple pattern and easy to sew. Then the fabric got so hard to find and I got busy raising my children. Now I sew for my daughter and granddaughter and my daughter is so hard to fit with commercial patterns. She would love this vintage style swimsuit.

  52. Bekk says:

I haven’t sewn a swimsuit yet but I’d love to give it a try.

  53. Jeny says:

    I’ve made a couple of suits: one a Kwik Sew 3064 http://jenyjenny.wordpress.com/2011/08/03/swim-suit-remnant-project/ and more recently, a Jalie 3354 http://jenyjenny.wordpress.com/2014/05/29/short-and-sweet-with-remnants/
I liked the results, and it wasn’t that difficult. I am going to try a couple of new Jalie patterns, the tankini and skirtini this summer. I love the look of that Sophie!

  54. Jenn says:

    yes, myself and others…
    Take your time!!

  55. kristonlion says:

I never have sewn one! but I’d love to try!

  56. marci macfarlane says:

I have never sewn a swimsuit. In fact I’m new to stretch fabric, but very willing and eager to try this pattern. I saw the bombshell swimsuit pattern about 2 or 3 months ago when I was looking for a swimsuit, I never tried to make a swimsuit because I’m a little afraid. If I won this pattern it would force me to try to make a swimsuit.

  57. MeryeBeth Albert says:

I’ve never sewn a swimsuit, but if I could find a flattering style, I would really love to give it a try!

  59. Trine says:

I’m just about to sew my very first bathing suit – starting with one for my 7 year old daughter.

  60. Laura says:

I made a swimsuit for my daughter last week (first attempt at swimwear!) and it went so well I’ve been contemplating making one for myself. I would like to cover my post-baby belly, but I’m tall, so finding a RTW one-piece swimsuit that fits hasn’t happened. This pattern looks like it’d fit the bill!

  61. Mandy says:

Hi there! Yes I’ve never made a swim suit as the mere thought of tackling spandex and swimsuit liner sends my cloth head into a frenzy! Won’t it be difficult? Will the end result fit? Will there be weeks of unpicking and lots of holes? :) I love the design of this costume & it looks fab in the patterned fabric – it would certainly be my first attempt and maybe the first well fitted cozy I’ve ever owned for the summer!

  62. Georgia says:

I have never made a swimsuit – stretchy fabrics scare me! But I’d love to give it a try. :)

  63. Sharon says:

I started a swimsuit in 2008 and have stopped because of the application of the elastic it has stalled big time!! I have admired the lines of this swimsuit for years and feel that with the sewalong I would conquer my fear of elastic!

  64. raquel g. says:

I bought some material, but I definitely like this pattern better than the one I bought! :)

  65. Eve says:

    Hello!

I have bought myself some lovely swimwear fabric, and it has sat in my collection for a few months now as I am too scared to use it! I have been watching the bombshell for a while now and want to give it a go!

    Eve

  66. Ashley says:

I have never really considered sewing a swimsuit, and at the very least not one for me. But there is this clever sewing shop here and they just had a class on this pattern. I was away on vacation, but it seemed like a great pattern and very flattering. I would love to try it out.

  67. Rachel says:

I did some altering to a one piece suit that I got off the rack last week but I have yet to try a bathing suit from the ground up.

  69. Angie H. says:

I haven’t made a swimsuit in maybe 20 years! I used to make them and leotards for myself in the 80′s. I’d like to try my hand again at making them. I always see lovely Lycra fabric at my local store, but just have been to pressed for time to try my hand again. Well, summer is her and it’s time to try!

  70. MaryLouise says:

I’ve been drooling over the bombshell since it came out – such a gorgeous design! Would love to try this pattern

  71. Mary says:

I’ve never sewn a full swimsuit but I did some alterations on one years ago. I used small zig zag stitch and it came out great! That was before I knew much about sewing so I’d love to give a full swimsuit a try. The Girl Charlee website has lots of great swimwear fabrics!

  72. Nancy says:

I have done many swimsuits. The fit can be quite forgiving with all that stretch. I use my bra pattern to insert a bra shelf, drafted from the frame and leaving out the cups. It’s something I saw in some upper end RTW and it works well! I have lusted for this pattern for some time, but just haven’t had the guts to go for it. Save me!

  73. Cheryl says:

Even longer ago, I made a swimsuit…sadly, it turned out to be transparent when wet! The fabric was sold as swimsuit-able….I haven’t tried since. (I lived in MA then, too!)

  74. Sherry says:

I’ve never sewn a swimsuit. Frankly, I’m scared. But this is a gorgeous pattern and I would love to try.

  75. Kira says:

I haven’t tried sewing a swimsuit yet, but I would love to make this one!

  76. Rox says:

I’d LOVE to make a swimsuit. I have not put my plan to action because of lack of swimsuit fabric in my town. I’d have to order fabric online, which can get PRICEY when you hail from Canada. Plus, i’m not so confident in sewing with that stretchy a material.

  77. Jessica says:

I’ve never sewn a swimsuit but I’d love to give it a try!

  78. emilie p says:

I have not sewn a swim suit, but would love to try. I love the look of this!

  79. Angela says:

Finding a nice fabric. I have one now with lemons and limes. Just need the pattern and this is the one I want.

  80. Kat says:

I’d been wanting to sew a swimsuit for ages, but never quite got up the courage. Then the Papercut Soma swimsuit pattern came out – just the push I needed to get brave and try making one! And it was far, far easier than I thought it would be. Don’t be scared of sewing swimsuits – you may be surprised how simple it actually is (and how little fabric they take up!).

I’ve had my eye on the Bombshell swimsuit for a while now, and now that I’ve conquered my fear of sewing swim fabric, I’d love to give it a go! :-)

  81. I haven’t sewn a swimsuit yet, perhaps it’s because I haven’t found the right fabric, more likely it’s the same reason as why I haven’t sewn lingere. I know I’ll have massive fit issues.

  82. Jennifer says:

I have never sewn a swimsuit before because I have never found a pattern I liked in the right size. I tend to go toward vintage and never find my size. I love this pattern because it’s perfect for my body shape and it would give me something to sew on my new serger!

  83. Mama Lusco says:

I have made swim suits for my girls and would love to try this one for me!

  84. Toni Leli says:

I’ve wanted to try sewing a bathing suit but couldn’t find a good pattern — until now! Love this pattern for my body type. Thanks!

  85. Anna (sixtyfourcolorbox) says:

I’ve intended to sew a swim suit every summer for the last 4 years. I even have the fabric and a couple patterns. I just haven’t gotten to them yet!

  86. Melise says:

I’ve never sewn a swimsuit before, but I spent last Saturday looking for one that would (swim)suit me and failing to come up with a satisfying result (meaning I’ve bought something but I’m not convinced). As a result, the idea of sewing one myself seems more and more attractive. I have never done it before because the idea of sewing for myself is relatively new to me and I have yet to tackle stretchy fabrics (it’s on my list for this summer).

  87. Kerry says:

I haven’t sewn swimwear yet but I have sewn undies and my tip is to use Stretch rather than ballpoint machine needles, they sew lycra fabrics much more effectively!

  88. Mara says:

I have had this swimsuit pattern on my Pinterest board for the longest time, I would love to sew it and also make my daughter a swimsuit, already know the colors I want on hers, aqua and red.

  89. I have never made a swimsuit before, I’ve found it difficult to find a good sewing pattern. But I love this model! And the sew along wil also be a great help!

  90. Jenny says:

I’m actually on the hunt for a swimsuit pattern! I finally feel brave enough to conquer sewing one. I’ve been spending all my time ready tutorials. All that’s left if finding the right pattern (BOMBSHELL!) and fabric :D

  91. Teri says:

I have never sewn swimwear before but I really want to try! I’d love to win this pattern!

  92. Laura says:

I have never tried a swimsuit…it just seems like a bigger commitment than a top or dress? I’m really interested in the high rise bottom option on this pattern, though!

  93. Donel says:

I bought fabric last summer and I have wanted to sew a suit ever since. Time and two young children have got in the way. :)

  94. Megan says:

I have never sewn swimwear and never thought it was something I would make, but now I think that I want to try!

  95. Bettina says:

No swimsuit yet…what has kept me from it? Shyness about being quite curvy- and not finding a pattern that might make a feature of it rather than trying to hide!
    xo Bettina

  96. Amy Mayen says:

I’ve never, ever sewn a swimsuit but all the blogging frenzy this summer makes me want to try!

  97. Jennifer in MA says:

So much cuter than the bathing suit I tried to sew about 15 years ago! yuck! I swore never again but with this pattern it looks like it might be a fun challenge before our Cape Cod vacation!

  98. Sarah says:

I would love to be able to sew a swimsuit, but have no idea where to start; it seems so complicated.

  99. Laura says:

I have never made a bathing suit but I’m really tempted – the pattern looks like it would be super flattering and I can avoid the horror that is bathing suit shopping.

  100. Jolien says:

I love the look of this pattern, the sweetie neckline is awesome! Before this pattern came out, I bought a swimsuit like this one, but I’d love to try to make my own in any fabric available!

    Thanks for the chance!

  101. Alexa says:

I have sewn a suit for my oldest daughter, which is now being used by my second daughter. It came out well. Now I need to try one for myself. I’ve really been wanting to try the bombshell pattern. :)

  102. Lindsay H says:

I have never sewn any kind of swimsuit! Looks fun though!

  103. I’ve sewn swimsuits for both of my girls and myself, in fact I have some fabric waiting for me to get around to making me another.

  104. Melissa says:

I have sewn a bikini top using a PDF pattern, and it was time consuming, but the end result was so perfect. I am kind of addicted, especially since the vintage style bathing suits are so expensive. I really want a beautiful tiger print, but haven’t found the perfect one yet.

  105. CaLynn says:

I have not sewn a swimsuit before. A long time ago, I tried my hand at stretchy fabric and it was a horrid disaster. I’ve come a long way since then, though, so now I am up for the challenge!

  106. Tina Short says:

I have never sewn a swimsuit but my Mother in Law once knit bathing costumes for her daughters……..!!!

  107. Sandi says:

Lovely. I have not sewn a swimsuit. Fear keeps me away I suppose. Having never worked with materials suitable for swimsuits, I have never tried. Recently I needed to purchase a new suit for wearing to the Y (YMCA); the store selections were horrible with most being very pricey. I would like to try my hand at sewing one for myself. This looks like it would cover what needs to stay covered in a community/family pool situation. Especially necessary for a…ahem…more mature lass.

  108. Jessie Hansen says:

I have never made a swim suit because the fabric is intimidating. Also, so many other projects on my to-do and WIP lists!

  109. Jessica T says:

I’ve never sewn a full size swim suit, I made a doll sized one (once). I never tried a full sized one because I thought I’d need a serger. I’ve seen such cute swim suit fabric at Girl Charlee though I’d really love to try.

  110. Amy M says:

I’ve been sewing for a number of years and book marked a number of swimsuit patterns but just haven’t found one before I loved and truly wanted to make. Except I love the look of the bombshell and would definitely be up for making it!

  111. Sox says:

I sewed a bathing suit once, a long time ago. I made a mess of the elastic, but I wore it anyway. I’m planning to try again this summer.
I’ve bought bathing suit fabric from Harts Fabrics. There other fabric is nice so I have to believe the bathing suit fabric will be as well.
Thank you for hosting a great giveaway.

  112. Jen B says:

I’d love to sew myself a swim suit, I always have to buy a 2 piece because I’m too tall for 1 piece to fit me. I’ve never made any clothing though, so I’d defiantly use the sew along.

  113. Sherri says:

I haven’t sewn a swimsuit, but I think it’s time. I just learned to use my mother’s hand-me-down serger and I’m ready for some spandex. These swimsuits look great. I’m always a fan of the retro style, so this pattern is perfect!

  114. Jess says:

I’ve never sewn a swimsuit. I really should learn; I’m oddly proportioned, to finding a swimsuit to buy is a bit of an ordeal! The fact swimsuit fabric is knit intimidates me, but I just realized that my sewing machine has some sort of setting for sewing knits (I’ve had it for oh, almost 4 years, and never read the manual all the way through! – bad Jess!) and so now I feel like I really should try sewing knits..

  115. Mary Kaye Cole says:

I’ve never seen a swimsuit because I’m scared of ruining the fabric. But I would love to be able to sew my own swimsuit because my shape is hard to fit.

  116. Ralitza says:

I have just bought the threads for my first swimsuit. Recently I realized I have never made underwear. After correcting this, swimsuit seemed the next thing to do. I plan to fully line it and have bought three different prints for three swimsuits. It is addictive from the very start. Proved!

  117. Amber Arnold says:

I gave swimsuit sewing a try this year for the first time and made four kids suits for my girls. It was easier than I thought it would be after some trial and error.

  118. Heather L says:

I’ve sewn a swimsuit for my daughter (when she was 5). There’s definitely a sense of pride making something as “specialty” as a swimsuit, although it wasn’t that hard. I would love a chance to tackle a grown up suit…especially one as cute as this! Thanks!

  119. lesley says:

i am totally new to sewing and am still trying to teach myself. i have only done several very basic projects so far: hand warmers, coffee cozies, etc. i would love to have the ability under my belt to learn how to make my own clothing!!!

  120. angelina says:

    arent they gorgeouss……

I sewed a couple of swimsuits and a bikini many years ago when I was a student and didn’t have much money – I seem to remember they turned out OK, although the fabric I was able to get back then wasn’t particularly exciting. Seeing all the versions of the bombshell swimsuit around the internet this summer is making me think I need to dig out my stretch needles and find some fabric and get myself ready for next summer (too late for this summer’s holiday).

I haven’t sewn a swimsuit, but would love to try. Thank you for the giveaway!

I did see a bathing suit once when I was about 12 years old and talking sewing lessons from a costume designer. But I don’t think I ever wore the suit. I recall it not fitting like I had hoped. Now that I am more familiar with garment construction I think it would be easier.
