We’re having lots of fun with our Favorite Indie Patterns series, curated by Sara Lawson of Sew Sweetness! Sara selected 31 patterns from 31 different designers to feature daily all month long, complete with many pattern giveaways. Don’t forget to comment for a chance to win a free pattern!

Name: Thurlow Trousers & Shorts

Brand: Sewaholic

Description: Finally, a modern trouser pattern designed for curvy hips, fuller thighs and a narrow waist! The Thurlow Trousers sit below the waistline, with a slightly flared leg. Pockets in front are subtle slash pockets that won’t add bulk to the hips.

Pattern includes a cute pair of cuffed shorts as well as full-length pants. Wear the shorts cuffed or un-cuffed, with an optional grosgrain ribbon belt.

A great feature of this pattern is the center back extension. Both trousers and shorts have extra-wide seam allowances at center back so they’re easily altered for a custom fit at the waist. Try on your pants when they’re partially sewn, and fit them to your body!

Sizing is proportioned for a pear-shaped figure: smaller waist, larger hips and thighs.

Format: Paper only

Skill Level: Intermediate

Techniques Involved: Fly facing, waistband, cuffs, belt loops, front slash pockets, back welt pockets.

Sizes: 0-16 (All sizes are included in one pattern!)

Recommended Fabrics: Medium weight woven fabrics, such as cotton twill, denim, suiting and wool blends. Stretch wovens are also suitable. Lining: lightweight woven fabric such as cotton batiste. Allow extra fabric to match plaids or stripes.

Price: $17.98

I’ve been interested in this pattern for awhile. I’d love to learn welt pockets.

  2. Megan says:

    No pocket experience.

  3. Anna (sixtyfourcolorbox) says:

I made welt pockets once. It was time consuming, but rather fun. I use slash pockets on occasion, but prefer using side seam pockets.

  4. Patricia says:

I have never made welt pockets. They are so pretty, but so intimidating!

  5. Andrea says:

I have never sewn anything with pockets, so I’d love to learn! Just got the Sewtionary from Sewaholic, so I’m sure that book will help me with the techniques I don’t know (there are a lot!).

I have pretty much the same measurements as the designer, so I’m pretty confident they will look as good on me as they do on her!

  6. sarah says:

I’ve made both kinds… the process of welt pockets is so confusing, but they seem easy to get right. I just made a few pairs of skinny jeans with a bottom weight stretch, and the slash pocket liners are popping out a lot… but they sort of act like pleats, so they’re passable.???

  7. Bethany M says:

I’ve tried slash pockets before but never welt pockets.

I’ve done faux welt pockets, but I hardly think that counts, lol!

I have sewn a few welt pockets and found them OK. I also found bound buttonholes which are v similar and might be easier than the usual kind!

  13. Jess Z says:

I have made a couple of things with slash pockets. but I haven’t done wel ptockets yet. These are on my list to purchase next. πŸ™‚

I am a newby when it comes to slash or welt pockets; but I know if anyone can get me through it Tasia can. I’d love to make these as shorts!!

  20. Heidi G says:

I’ve only done patch pockets and zippered pockets. These are lovely trousers.

  21. Lindsay H says:

OMG what a blessing to see a pattern that makes sense – thanks

  28. Jaimee says:

I love this pattern! I would make these trousers in wool suiting for work regularly, and I will absolutely try it in denim for casual Fridays. This pattern can be dressed up or down, pring or solid, and the shorts could be made to go with any top you can think of! This is one that I would use repeatedly!

  29. Colleen says:

I don’t have experience with either type of pocket. I’ve sewing my first pair of shorts right now and have just done a fly zipper for the first time! Lauren of LLADYBIRD just posted about these shorts and how fantabulous they are to were and sew and I really want these now.

I have not sewn either of those pockets. I don’t tend to make pants. I’m still trying to master fitting with a shirt and/or dress before even thinking about pants. Would love to win because I am turning from a hourglass shape into a pear and wanted to give sewaholic patterns a try. Thanks.

  33. Jess says:

This website is being weird and saying that I’ve “already said that” when I click submit once . . . so I hope this isn’t a double entry, but here is my response.

A long time ago I made a pair of jeans, complete with proper jeans pockets, etc. I forgot to lengthen the pattern and so they ended up too short – so it was a lot of work for nothing. I haven’t done them since!

  34. Marcia R says:

This pattern looks fantastic! I would wear those pants daily for work!

  36. Julie says:

I have no experience at all. But I would make myself learn just so I could sew myself a pair of shorts that would sit at the ‘perfect’ length.

  37. Lisa says:

Just be sure to interface properly on a slash pocket or it will end up stretching out and standing away from your body. I love the Palmer and Pletsch interfacings, they add stability without bulk.

  38. Vicki says:

I have done welt pockets before, but I would love a chance to try making myself a pair of shorts!

  39. Suzie says:

I have only ever tried side-seam and patch pockets so I know welt pockets are next on my hit list. I’m a pear shaped girl and I’ve had my eye on this lovely pattern as I’ve yet to tackle trousers or shorts and I recon these would give me a lot less grief when it comes to fitting than a regular pattern – I’d love to win!

  40. Tabitha Keener says:

I’m pretty new to sewing and I haven’t tried clothing yet but I would love to! Thanks for the giveaway!

I don’t usually include pockets as I like a smooth, uncluttered line. I like to wear my t shirts over my trousers and pockets interfere with the look.

I’ve been afraid to try pants, so I have very little pocket experience!!

  60. Nancy says:

I’ve done both kinds of pockets. Take your time. The result will show care taken with grain lines, pressing, straight stitching and careful marking. I love that these pants describe who they would fit best. My figure is just the other way around. I’d rather know they aren’t for me than struggle through a wadder. I’ll have to check them out and see if they have apple pants for me.

  61. Jen says:

I do need, err, want to make shorts! I’ve been hemming & hawing over the Thurlow pattern and another pattern! I’ve sown slash side packets in kids pants. It was pleasantly easy!
