6 Weeks of LOVE for Softies

on February 22 | in Sewing Inspiration | by | with 27 Comments

At Sew Mama Sew we’re proud of the variety of projects, tutorials, tips and inspiration we are able to bring you. Our archives are full of quilt blocks, pillow tutorials, garment tips and lots and lots of free patterns for unique gifts. One thing we’ve never explored in depth, however, is the art of making soft toys. Perhaps we’ve shied away from all those small parts and the three-dimensional sewing. Maybe we’ve tried to focus on more utilitarian items. Possibly we’re doing too much selfish sewing. Recently, however, we’ve felt up to the challenge of making softies– plush, soft toys and cloth dolls– and we hope you are too! Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, we’d love for you to join us in making something just for the challenge and the fun of it. You can’t wear it, carry things in it or enter it in a quilt show, but you can experience great joy and put a a smile on someone’s face by simply sewing a softie.

So without further adieu, welcome to 6 Weeks of LOVE for Softies! We’ll still bring you the great mix of sewing projects you know and love at Sew Mama Sew, but we also have lots of fantastic posts focused on softies. Over the next month and a half we’ll have:

  • Free patterns, tutorials, tips and techniques from some of the best softies experts in the business.
  • A daily inspirational soft toy or doll.
  • The Spectacular Softies Contest: We have contest categories for everyone, from first-time softie makers to plush and doll designers. You can enter to win fabric, books, thread, patterns, polyfil or even the Grand Prize, a Pfaff Creative 3.0 sewing and embroidery machine valued at $3,999! No, we aren’t kidding! (Learn more tomorrow.)
  • A Soft Toy Drive to benefit children in foster care. Help us bring smiles to the faces of foster kids throughout the US by making and contributing a soft toy or cloth doll. Everyone who sends a softie to us will have their name put in a drawing for a beautiful doll, donated by Bamboletta! (Learn more Tuesday.)

There are dozens of of extremely talented plush and doll designers and pattern makers running successful small business, writing informative books and creating beautiful, whimsical, cute or quirky softies. We asked many of the very best to join us this month and we’re thrilled they graciously agreed:

Abby Glassenberg of Abby Glassenberg Designs

Last week, I could see how to enter the contest and see the other entries, but for some reason, I can no longer find the page that includes that information.

This sounds like a Great Idea! Only thing is where exactly is all the info and tutorials etc?
The only thing I’m finding is people selling their stuff as usual Help?

We are posting one inspirational softie every day, and also tutorials and articles. I think if you browse through the past two weeks of content you’ll find some good information.

What fun..I haven’t made a softie since my son was little but I’m willing to give it a try….

  6. Norma says:

I would love to participate in this wonderful project. I am from South Africa – is it still possible to take part?

  7. Lisa says:

Will they accept handmade toys? I’ve been so frustrated by all these toy drives that will only accept new unopened purchased toys. When I was growing up, there was a man in my neighborhood whose hobby was making wooden toys. Every year he donated hundreds of these amazing trucks and pull-toys, until they told him they could only accept commercially-made toys. Liability, don’t you know. Utterly crushing.

  8. Celia says:

    Would love to participate!

  9. What a playful adventure! I’m looking forward to following along, learning from some of the greats in toy design. I also design doll patterns and am expecting to have loads of fun. Down the rabbithole we go and let’s see who lives there!
