Without further ado, the winners of our Spectacular Softies Contest!

Category: This Is My First Stuffed Animal, Soft Toy or Cloth Doll

Winner:

Anika and Annabelle

Noël Matchet posted wonderful progress shots of her pair, Anika and Annabelle, on Instagram, including a half-finished elephant and the caption “My first attempt at embroidery.” Holy smokes, we think you’re a natural, Noël! And the top knot on Anika? Gah, so cute! Both characters turned out great and together they are a truly amazing and imaginative duo. They may be her first softies, but we hope they’re not her last.

Winner:

Louis and Nell

Needless to say, “details” is the key word here! Louis & Nell, created by Deborah Fisher, were impeccably created down to their underwear! Our judges voted for them in both categories in which they were submitted, but it was the shoes, the art supplies, the clothes, the hair and the embroidered camisole that shot them to the top of the Details category. View Louis and Nell in their skivvies on Deborah’s blog, and check out her book, Sew Fun: 20 Projects For the Whole Family.

Overall Cute/Scary/Beautiful/Squeezability Factor

Winner:

Alice in Wonderland + White Rabbit

Maybe it’s the heart, or the striped socks, or the rosy cheeks. Whatever it is, our judges just couldn’t resist that je ne sais quoi factor when it came to this pair. In fact, Anabel Félix seems to be able to regularly tap into that thing that makes you want to collect cute softies, no matter your age. Witness the dozens of examples in her shop, blita. (You’ve been joyfully warned.)

Grand Prize

Winner:

Archer the Fox

Michelle White’s Archer the Fox placed in the top two in both categories she entered, and was an overall favorite of many of the judges. The cute self-made pattern, the stellar execution, the wonderful details and the unique, retro-but-current (It’s 1973 Disney! And it’s a fox!) design all contributed to the charming, grand prize-worthy effect. Read more about Archer (and the very sweet back story) on Michelle’s blog, Falafel and the Bee.

The Prize:

The prize: a Pfaff Creative 3.0 sewing and embroidery machine valued at $3,999! Read more here.

  10. Wanda says:

It looks like four of the winning softie makers won because they “designed it myself” rather than for the category they won under. I expected more from this site.

    • Kristin says:

I don’t think it’s true. The judges voted based on the images and the categories in which they were submitted. “Details” won for details, the one for “first softie” got the most votes in that category. I don’t think anyone looked through (how could they have time?!) to research whether or not it was a self-designed pattern. I admit that I researched them in order to write a little something about each one, but the ones that won were the ones with the most votes.
