The Super Online Sewing Match II: Contest Sponsored by Sew Mama Sew + Janome!

on June 10 | in Contests & Giveaways, Super Online Sewing Match | by | with 20 Comments

You asked and we are delivering! Two years ago we held the first Super Online Sewing Match (SOSM), our in-it-to-win-it garment sewing contest in which 10 exceptional sewists competed to win a wonderful Janome sewing machine. The first SOSM was one of our favorite events. Not only was it nail-bitingly close, but we were incredibly inspired by our challengers– all women with great skills plus the ability to take a pattern and make it flatter their body and reflect their personality at the same time. This summer we’re kicking off The Super Online Sewing Match II!

(You can find all of our previous Super Online Sewing Match posts here. Our Grand Prize Winner announcement included links to every round in the contest. The winner, Kelli Ward, has put her Janome machine to good use, launching her successful True Bias patterns.)

We’ll tell you all about the Grand Prize package tomorrow, but just a hint– it includes TWO new Janome machines! First we want to tell you a little about how the contest works and invite you to “audition” to be a challenger.

Auditions
You have 11 days to let us know if you’d like to throw your name in the hat as a challenger. We will select 10 contestants from all entries. We’re looking for great garment sewists of all shapes, ages, looks, etc. who also have good photography skills and are comfortable writing about themselves and sewing. You should have intermediate to advanced sewing skills, or be an ambitious, capable sewist willing to learn things with time pressure. You should feel comfortable modeling each week or have a willing model to show off your work (women’s wear and accessories).

Requirements
If you’d like to become a challenger you must:

  • Be available to sew five projects between June 24 and August 19. If you are going on vacation for a month, it probably won’t work out. If you are taking short trips here and there, it might work. Feel free to email us to talk about it.
  • Be able to provide some supplies for your project. All challengers will receive a gift certificate for each round, but notions and add-ons are up to you.
  • Live in North America. Janome USA is sponsoring the contest and can only award the prize to a resident of Canada, the US or Mexico.
  • Be willing to share photos of yourself and tell your story. We want to get to know you!
  • Have a blog, Flickr and/or Instagram account.
  • Take excellent photos that show the finished project in detail. For example, we’ll want to see the projects on a person, as well as close-ups of the inside seams, the zipper installation, the hem, etc.)
  • Be willing and able to print PDF patterns.
  • Be enthusiastic, ready for some hard work and prepared to show off your skills and your creativity!

(We encourage you to read the judges’ comments about the first contest to see what made Kelli stand out.)

How Does the Contest Work?

Round 1

  • Contestants receive their first set of instructions which they have 7 days to complete.
  • Contestants post detailed photos of their completed project on their blog or on Flickr.
  • Judges eliminate two contestants.

Round 2

  • Contestants receive their second set of instructions which they have 10 days to complete.
  • Again, posting of photos and two contestants eliminated.

Round 3

  • Contestants have 9 days to complete the project.
  • Two eliminations.

Round 4

  • Contestants have 11 days to complete the project.
  • ONE elimination.

Round 5

  • The 3 remaining contestants have 10 days to complete the project.
  • Grand Prize winner selected!

Projects + Designers

We won’t tell you the specific patterns, but we can say there will be four garments and one bag. Each round is a little more complex than the previous round. All the pattern designers will be guest contributors on the blog and will each write a helpful post related to their pattern during the contest.

Gift Certificates

Contestants don’t have to make it to the end to win a fabulous prize! For each round they advance they’ll win gift certificates from our generous fabric store sponsors. (Look for more about our sponsors next week!)

Community Contest

You can play along! Even if you’re not one of the 10 main contestants, you can sew and submit your photos to win great prizes. You can participate in one round or all five, and you don’t have to sew the same pattern. If the round is focused on a skirt pattern you can sew any skirt and enter to win. We’ll have lots more information about this part of our match coming up soon, so watch the site for details.

How To Audition

  • Send an email to beth@sewmamasew.com, with the subject line SOSM (Super Online Sewing Match) by Sunday, June 21 at midnight PST.

I have several questions. Is this like a once a year thing? Is this contest already complete? What if I am not able to make the patterns? Do I have to purchase them? How do I send you the photos? http://www.projectsgirl1.blogspot.com

  2. Joor says:

I will be sewing along! I’m very curious about the patterns and really need to sew a new bag!

    • Kristin says:

We can’t reveal the actual patterns until the round, but we can tell you there will be a bag!

  3. fcevriye says:

I am living in Ireland and will have some job interviews during the contest. However I would like to join as a play along sewist if you will be sharing the patterns for all. Looking forward to see the makes of the contestants! Best luck and fun for everyone!

  4. Kathi says:

Another Question. Will we have to purchase new fabric for each project? I ask because my stash of fabric is … well … I just moved and about half of the boxes I packed were labeled “yarn”, “fabric” or both! If I have a fabric suitable for the project parameters, can I use my own fabric?

    • Beth says:

Kathi– You have to provide fabric but it can be from your stash or newly purchased. We provide gift certificates for fabric but if you already have something that works you can save the gift certificate for a different project. Thanks!

  5. Kathi says:

Oh, I’ve got to try this! It sounds like so much fun. I’ve been sewing now for 55 years (started handsewing at ten, self-taught, had sewing in home ec and had my first sewing machine at twenty). Do the photos submitted have to be adult clothes. I ask because most of my photos are of clothing made for my granddaughters’ 18″ dolls or clothes for the girls. I do have photos of some of the bridesmaid and flower girl dresses I’ve made over the years, I could scan and upload them if doll clothes aren’t acceptable. Another question on what I could submit. I completely remade a wedding dress from a strapless gown with a long train to a strapless dress, no train and a jacket (made from the train). Would that be an acceptable “audition” photo?

    • Beth says:

Sure, Kathi. Kid clothes would work, and doll clothes could show technique/skill. The wedding dress photo sounds like it would work too. Thanks!

  6. I began sewing clothing many years ago, but have been designing and making quilts for many, many years instead. Recently, I have been getting the urge to make simple clothes again. This may be just the spark that I need to move again , for awhile, from quilts to clothes….

If I want to be a ‘shadow’ participent can I still get the patterns? I am surely not good enough to enter….but maybe next year…!!

Thanks for organizing this fun event!

  7. Finally, a contest I can enter. I live in Mexico and it’s included! You can’t imagine how jazzed I am. Please, please, please let be a contestant! I sent an application email as soon as I saw this post. Now I’ve seen the prizes and I’m so impressed!

    regards,
    Theresa

  8. sabiha says:

so you will tell us what the contestants should sew?

    • Kristin says:

There are 5 rounds and each round will be a different pattern. We won’t announce the pattern until the round starts.

  9. Marianne says:

Exciting! The first contest made me start my blog, so much fun! I do hope the Community Contest allows us Europeans to join in.

  10. Jordan says:

This is so cool! What a great contest and chance to see some good sewing skills and creativity. Can’t wait to see more!

  11. Kennis says:

Oh I love to join except I don’t live in North America. I hope next time the contest is opened up for international participants. I can’t wait to see the contestants’ projects!

  12. karen says:

Each round is a little more complex than the PREVIOUS? Or do they really get easier?

    • Kristin says:

Corrected. Thank you for catching that.

  13. OOOOH! This is so very exciting! Congrats Beth and Kristin on another season! As a competitor in SOSM Match I, I can attest to the exhilaration of participating…I’ve got a couple of butterflies just thinking about it! I frequently think back to the summer of 2013 and how much fun I had.

If you are considering entering; don’t doubt, just do it!
