Handmade Holidays Nov. 17: Gifts for the Dapper Gentleman

on November 17 | in Handmade Holidays, Sewing Inspiration, Sewing Tutorials + Patterns | by | with 84 Comments

Not sure what to get the stylish and sophisticated men on your gift giving list? Having the finest of manners, a man in this category may thank you politely for a set of quilted potholders or a crocheted cat sweater, but he may be even more appreciative of a gift he can really use. Here are some ideas for handmade gifts that are perfect for the dapper gentlemen in your life!

Today’s Guest Curator:
Mariah McPherson and Annie Hudnut from Red Rabbit Mercantile

From Mariah and Annie:
Red Rabbit Mercantile is a mother-daughter operation based in Boulder, Colorado. We sell lovingly crafted sewing patterns and carefully curated supply kits for beautiful, practical DIY bags made of waxed canvas. We also sell waxed canvas and Eco Twill fabric by the yard. Along with our bag patterns and kits, we share tips, tricks, and tutorials for better bag making on our blog.

Make It

The Benjamin Dopp Kit
This fully-lined waxed canvas dopp kit is perfectly sized for all kinds of grooming essentials, from mustache wax to a boar’s bristle hair brush. Once you’ve got the hang of it, this bag sews up in a flash.

Waxed Canvas Wine Tote
The well-heeled gentleman never goes to a party empty handed! This classy waxed-canvas wine tote from Taylor Tailor is the perfect hostess gift. Pairs well with anything from Champagne to Pinot Noir.

Happy Bow Tie
There is nothing quite so dapper as a bow tie! Make this adjustable bow tie from Grainline Studio from a repurposed flannel shirt for a festive holiday look. This is the perfect project for using up scraps. These bow ties can also be worn by fashionable felines and dignified dogs.

Flannel Hand Warmers
Does anyone else out there have a man in their life with an unbelievable quantity of button-up flannel shirts? Instead of asking questions like “Aren’t all of these shirts identical?” simply take one or two from the back of the closet and re-fashion them into these wonderful hand warmers from Sadie Seasongoods. Cozy, warm, and…oddly familiar?

A Warm and Wintery Cocktail
The holiday season is the perfect time to pull up a leather chair to the fire place, read a good book, and scratch a loyal Irish Setter behind the ears. The perfect complement to these activities is the Honey Winter Bourbon Cocktail with Sage Syrup from One Broad’s Journey. This recipe, along with a vintage set of low-ball cocktail glasses from your favorite thrift store would make a lovely gift for the man who appreciates getting cozy.

Homemade Shaving Soap
Looking for something special to include in your handmade dopp kit? This luscious recipe for foaming shaving soap from Kat Siddle at Seamwork Magazine is just the thing! Aloe vera helps to soothe irritated skin, while essential oils add a subtle manly scent.

Beard Oil
For those gentlemen that prefer to go unshaven in the winter months, this lovely beard oil from the The Hippy Homemaker softens and tames those scritchy whiskers while imparting a nice manly fragrance.
