I like Janome because they use high quality internal components. This is one I've used before that I would highly recommend - it's ultra reliable: http://www.top-sewing-machines.com/review/janome-dc2012/9.

Why are you so opposed to Brother? Sure, they make some cheap machines, but they also make some very high quality ones. Here's another one I've used in the past that I have nothing but good things to say about: http://www.top-sewing-machines.com/review/brother-pq1500s/6.

Whatever you decide, just be sure to do your research on the individual model and not the brand. Companies can change over time, and some models can be better or worse than others. Don't always rely solely on a brand name.

try changing the needle--one that is for the fabric being sewed
try adjusting the tension
if none of these suggestions help then the machine needs to be checked again..

try using a different needle, one for stretchy fabric
you may also have to adjust the tension for the fabric also
make sure the top thread does not come off the thread take up lever.

Are you pulling the threads behind the needle and holding it until your stitching starts?

Why does my thread knot like crazy when I sew the ends of elastic together, but is fine of just fabric?  How do I fix this?

Thanks!

Just curious if anyone knows what might be causing my bobbin stitches to look like this:

I had my machine professionally serviced after buying it used and all tension is set to default. This photo is the bobbin stitches with a brand new needle, stitching through two interfaced pieces of cotton. Please help!

Ok great. I was wondering if just using the bobbin winder would work.  It seems as though there are a few options out there, the Ez winder and bob n wind, as well.

Well, typically your serger thread doesn't show.  I do try to match mine or use a fun color for contrast even thought it is on the inside.  When doing a rolled hem, it will show.  You can wind bobbins off a single cone of serger thread and use them in your serger.  Then you will have enough spools to put in each spot without having to buy and store a ton of cones of thread.
