I've had the Tova Top on my list of to do's for about a year now, and I've been considering what fabrics to use just like you. One thing I did early on was browse through Wiksten's Flickr pool (http://www.flickr.com/groups/wikstenpatterns/) or just do a "Tova Top" photo search on Flickr and look at what kinds of fabrics others used.  See what you think drapes nice and looks best. If you see one you think looks good, click on the photo, sometimes the seamstress will say what fabric she used. After doing that, I decided that I liked the way chambrays look, linen blends, lawns, and double gauzes look, but that's my personal preference.

Also, the season you plan on wearing your top could determine the fabric you choose.  For example, a thin lawn or cotton might work best in the spring/summer; a thicker chambray or linen might be better in the fall/winter. I've also seen some people shorten the sleeves for warmer weather wear. I've also seen it layered with a long sleeve knit shirt under for cold weather. Just some food for thought. Smiley

Thanks for your response, Irene.  I was wondering about this and then had a chat with a woman I know who works in a yarn store about PJ pants patterns.  She had the same question so I figured it was worth asking.

Yep, fabric requirement is probably the biggest difference and also most people like the least amount seams in something they lounge and sleep in. I don't think there's a "right" or better way. It's just what you prefer.

I've just started sewing for myself a bit and am super excited about making a few new things.

I thought it would be fun to share favourite patterns we have made for ourselves here.

Thanks!

I just made a Tova top (long tunic length) in a quilting cotton.  It turned out really nice and I love it, but it's quite a heavy weight of quilting cotton and so the top is not super flowy (not that it needs to be, but..)  I'll try another in a lighter weight fabric for a summer blouse, I think.

It did get me thinking about fabric for tops though.  I don't sew for myself often, but I'm hoping to make a few more tops for myself.  I like fairly casual clothing (I'm an at home mom).  Are there fabrics that are particularly good for tops? Obviously personal taste and shirt style make a difference, but I was curious is there is a fabric type you all like to sew tops from?

Thanks for your input! Smiley

I don't know where to find that exact pattern but it looks like a pretty basic dress with ruffles added on the sleeves and bias.  I think too that the fabric is very bold and unique and if you could find a similar chevron print, you could make almost any simple dress pattern look like this.  Good luck!

Does anyone know where I might be able to find a dress pattern similar to this?

Not sure if you still need this but the Wiksten tank top is a great pattern.

Anyone know of any tutorials or patterns sold that are for a wristlet that has a zippered compartment and a non zippered compartment? It needs to fit a phone and card/ $? DD is in need for something like this and I figured I could make this for her. Thanks!
