Ikea fabric - how does it hold up?

    Ikea fabric - how does it hold up?
    on: March 06, 2009, 10:41:42 AM
    Hi there;

    I have a question - has anyone here used the Ikea 'by the yard' fabrics?  I just bought a 3 meter mini bolt that I love, but I'm worried about how well it will stand up to repeated washings.  Has anyone here used it for garment making or quilting and could comment on how it handles repeated washings?  It's got a lot of red, and I'd be crushed if there was significant fade.

    Thanks!

      I've used their heavier home dec fabric for my tote bags and have not noticed any fading or fast wearing.  In fact, it seems to get softer which for me isn't a bad thing.

         Shocked Where have I been?  IKEA sells fabric!

        Good thing it's a two hour drive to the closest one for me...that place gets me in trouble every single time.

            I used an IKEA duvet I found at a thrift store to make little sit-upons for my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders to use in my music classroom.  They get a lot of abuse in the course of a day and the fabric has held up perfectly since I made them in August.

              I've made a few pairs of curtains and used the remnants for totes etc and it has been great so far. I like that it is colourful, modern, funky and CHEAP! Fabric here in the UK can be really dear but the IKEA stuff is very reasonable.

                  I LOVE the ikea fabrics. I love to go and stock up on the solids. I hit a sale one day and bought 20 yards of fabric for less than $30. I haven't had any problems with the fabric so far.

                    I've also made curtains and even children smocks and everything I've used has held up surprisingly well.

                      I used some IKEA fabric for some aprons and pillowcase dresses recently and it seems to hold up really well.  My favorite is when they sell the material on the small bolts.  I feel like I own a tiny fabric store.

                        How much do they sell it for does anyone know?  IKEA isn't very close to me (thank goodness) but I know they do have adorable fabric!

                            I'm washing all of my sit-upons for my classroom made out of Ikea fabric today because one of them was the victim in an accident...  We'll see what hot water and a hot dryer does to all of it.

                              there are a number of etsy fabric sellers who have the ikea fabrics available if you cant get to a store or ikea doesnt ship to your area...my closest store is close to 3 hrs away and i happened to go there this weekend...aaahhhhh...i am bringing a truck next time. they have really cute children's fabrics for sure..i am glad everyone has had good experience because i havent been able to use my stash yet. i was wondering because its weave didnt seem as tight or soft as some of our quilting cottons but maybe with washings they get softer.

                              yall keep posting to let us know how things are still holding up ...

                              yay ikea!!

                                Hot water cycle+ hot dryer = still great fabric...actually, it feels softer and the colors just popped.
