Ikea fabric - how does it hold up?

Just went to Ikea this week with 24 year-old son, scouting furniture for his first apartment.  We loved the kids' section the best!  Second best was the fabric.  Prices were $6 to $9 range, as I recall.  LOVED the bold graphics (especially black and white poppy heads), but became paralyzed with sew-fear and so didn't actually buy.  I, too, wondered about the fabric's holding-up factor.  May have to go back. . . . .

OH! this thread was invaluable, cuz I FORGOT they sold fabric.  Kids, hold onto your monies...Momma's gonna buy fabric.  It was also real good to know how the fabric behaves, eg, the softness it obtains with repeated washings.

Cheesy  I'm SO glad I'm not the only one this happens to!!  Sometimes I'm filled with project inspiration (those are dangerous times Wink) and other times....ACK!  The dreaded sew-fear paralysis!

I definitely notice that they're cottons tend to be a bit rough at first, but do soften up.

I love Ikea fabric.  I just bought some on my recent trip to Orlando to make a "challenge quilt".  I am planning to use every last scrap for applique, purses, totes...you name it!

They have great fabric, beautiful and good quality. And they are quite cheap.

I shop at Ikea a lot and I've often wondered how well their fabric holds up! I'll have to pick some up next time we're there.

I'm trying to be a very aware/conscious consumer and avoid companies that exploit their workers, are socially irresposible, or take no concern for the earth.  I know that Ikea is one of few large companies to take these things into consideration, so I'm glad to know they sell fabric!  Does anyone else know much about fabric manufacturers in these matters?  I haven't been able to find out much, except what I already know about places like Walmart (and they're discontinuing their fabric).

I've never bought fabric by the yard from them, but I have bought bed linens that have stood up very well. Some folks I know use the bed sheets for other purposes, such as for quilt backing fabric (for machine quilted quilts).

I'm glad someone asked this question, as I've always wondered whether their fabric was any good! They have some cute prints, and they seem like they'd be fun to work with. I'll have to get some next time I'm at Ikea.

I get an accident of one sort or another in my music classroom every year-  usually it's throw up, this year it was something else.

I've never used the ikea yardage, but my duvet cover is from ikea, and it's held up well to use, washing and three cats (who cause more frequent washings....)

                          I like their bookshelves too.

Just bought a bunch of IKEA fabric to make curtains and duvet cover for my teenager. I'm worried about shrinkage. Anyone had any experience with this? Should I pre-shrink the fabric before I cut it?

                            Thanks!!

I would definetly pre-wash the IKEA fabric. Recently I bought a yard of their havier homefurnishing fabrics. The lady at the counter gave me about 39 inches. After washing I had exactly 36 inches left.

But, their fabrics do hold up very nicely and colors don't fade much after washing.

Thanks so much for this post!  I too, have wondered how these fabrics wear after washing and use.  I know I will "go nuts" picking out fabric the next time I am at IKEA!

Thanks for furthering my obsession with IKEA...
