The correct thread for garment sewing?
    on: June 14, 2008, 01:53:29 PM
I've recently started getting into making clothing for my girls, but am beginning to think it's not as straightforward as it seems.  As an example, I've been using the Guterman's 100% cotton thread I use for quilting and general sewing.  A few times, though, the seams have popped out of shirts after only a few wears and washes.  My seams have been the usual 1/2", so I don't think they're too skimpy or anything.  Should I be using some other stronger type of thread?  So far, I've also been using 100% cotton fabrics, too, so I thought the fabric and thread should match in fiber content...

I have used the Guterman thread without any problems but I'm probably just as likely to use Coats & Clark. I have not had any seams pop on any of the garments I've made.

I use Guterman thread as well, but the 100% polyester.  I think it's stronger.

I use Metrosene (polyester) for clothing and crafts, I only use cotton (Mettler or Aurafil) for piecing quilts.

I've been using coats & clark dual duty for clothes. No seams popping at all.

This is what I use and I don't have any problems.

You shouldn't have any problems with this thread. You might want to check your stitch length and make sure that you are sewing with a 2.5 to 3.0 stitch length. If you are sewing with a longer stitch length like a 4-5, that could be a reason your threads are popping.
