Where to buy fabric in Canada

Where to buy fabric in Canada
    on: March 19, 2009, 10:52:34 AM
I am reading all of these wonderful blogs with Amy Butler, Michael Miller, etc fabric and cannot seem to find anywhere to buy these fabrics in Canada.

Does anyone know of any good fabric stores near Saint John New Brunswick or good Canadian on line stores?

Would love to have your input.

    Thanks

I live near Saint John, New Brunswick too!!!  I wish I had a good answer to your question as I have also fallen in love with many designer fabrics since discovering Sew Mama Sew (if there were no such thing as customs and duty taxes I would have placed many orders by now!) Smiley  I have found a few on-line sources through an internet search, but haven't ordered from any of them yet so I can't tell you what they are like.  They are:

http://www.hamelsfabrics.com/  They have both Amy Butler and Michael Miller fabrics
Then there is this list: http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ae862/mailorder.html
If you go on the Amy Butler website http://www.amybutlerdesign.com/buy/ there is a list of stores, and if you click on find a shop in your area and then click on Canada, there is a list of Canadian shops and some have mail-order (the farthest East store is in Montreal, so no luck in finding anything in Atlantic Canada!)
Ebay also has lots of listings for these fabrics, but again they are usually being sent from the U.S.

A little closer to home, Town & Country Quilts in Rothesay is supplied by a company that carries Michael Miller - I don't know if they regularly carry any of his line or not, but it might be worth a phone call.

Good luck!  I'd be interested in knowing if anyone has ordered from any of these places and what they are like!  If you only want a small amount of fabric, you can order up to $20 from the United States without having to pay duty on it.  Even with the exchange on the dollar, most of these fabrics cost less across the border.

      Hope that helps!

Hi, I'm in Canada too, but on the other side in BC. I would recommend buying fabric online - especially at Sew, Mama, Sew. The prices are good (even with the exchange rate and shipping) and they have great customer service. I know I can't get any designer fabric where I live....

There are a handful of Canadian Etsy sellers (no customs delays or duty charges!) and some Canadian eBay sellers with fabric.  It's hard, I have nothing anywhere near me either!

I buy fabric on eBay too... if shipping is affordable.

Another good store (yes, I'm sort of affiliated - I do work on her website) is http://www.cherishedpieces.com/, she sells Amy Butler and lots of other nice fabric too. She is located in Ontario though, so shipping might be a bit steep.

For the person in BC, Fabricana (Richmond and Coquitlam), and Quilt Essentials Fabrics in Abbotsford stock a good supply of in demand fabrics like Amy Butler and Heather Ross and Michael Miller.  Sorry none of them do mail order as far as I can tell.  There are not very many online retailers in Canada for some reason.

Glad that I read this post...

I live just out side SJ, NB. close to the border you can get fabric shipped to Johnson's hardware in Calais Me. for around $3 or so, then pay the tax coming across but at least the shipping would be a little less. There is a small shop in St Andrews, Sew Natural, she carries a small selection of fabric. I have a question for anyone, what type of machine do you use?

I just bought some fabric from www.pinkpandafabrics.ca.  The prices seem good and right now they're having a grand opening special -- Canadian money at par.

I have found this great on-line store in Quebec called Flair for Fabric, with Amy Butler, Heather Ross and Tanya Whelan fabric just to name a few.  Customer service was great and shippeing was fast.

Its worth to try  http://www.tissu.co.uk  .They have huge collection of fabrics. All fabrics are reasonably priced and even though they are situated in Engaland(UK) their international postage is also cheap. I ordered some fabrics through  http://www.tissu.co.uk  and all the fabrics I got were great.

                              Hi there,

I've just started a Canadian online fabric store called Dutch Girl Textiles.  I sell mostly Amy Butler, Heather Bailey, Valori Wells, Joel Deberry, etc.  Check it out at www.dutchgirltextiles.com.  Hope that helps all the (Canadian) people looking for designer fabrics who don't want to pay high shipping costs.

                              Thanks,
                              Jody

Great fabrics, Jody!  I live in Ottawa and I don't see a lot of the fabrics you have.  Congratulations!
