Altering kids' pajama neckline - how?

Altering kids' pajama neckline - how?
    on: March 19, 2009, 04:17:27 PM
    Hi,

I have a boy who loves pajamas out of woven cloth (like flannel), but hates buttons.  I was thinking of making him a pullover with a relatively high neck (think t-shirt) with a v-shaped slit in the front of the neckline so that he can get his head through.  I'm assuming that if I interface it, it won't be all floppy.

Would this work at all?  How would I go about drafting it?  I haven't done anything like this before - I've always just followed the patterns.  I've looked all around for a pattern with this sort of neckline to no avail.  If all else fails, I guess I'll buy ribbing and do a v-neck.

    Thanks for any advice!

Could you find a SHIRT with the pattern you want and just make it out of the pj fabric?  I'm having trouble picturing what you are describing (and I am not good with pattern drafting either).  I have been known to add two patterns together to get the exact shape I want, though.  That might work here too.

I think Trina's gave some good advice.  I would start with a t-shirt that fits well and can be pulled over his head.  You can cut it up for your pattern or draw one.  Just be sure to add in seam allowances and practice on some cheap fabric first.

Have you considered making a scrubs-style shirt?  I made one for my son for Christmas and he loves it.

            I'll probably end up with a scrubs-style shirt; that's a great idea.

I ran across a photo that looks like what I had in my head at http://willowluna.wordpress.com/2008/03/14/handmade-day-4.

But, the photo shows the unfinished shirt, and I'm not sure exactly how to go about turning those inside curves.  Maybe if I just sit down and play with some fabric it will make sense.

            Thanks for the advice, everyone.

To finish the V shaped part of the neck line you can put in a plackit, basicly its a piece of fabric that is folded like double thick bias tape and sewn on over the raw edge. you could use bias tape or make your own plackit to match. When you sew it on be sure to make the seam allowance of the shirt to be wider at the top and as narrow as you can at the point of the V or it wont look right. you will also have to clip the seam allowance at the point of the V so that it will look and fit right. Fray check helps so it will not fray and come apart on you. I hope this is helpful. I've done many many plackits so if you need more guidence shoot me an email or leave a comment on my blog. whiteplumsews.blogspot.com

                Thanks so much, Rissalynne.

I'm going to give it a go on the next PJ top.
