Making Rulers non-slip

    Making Rulers non-slip
    on: June 18, 2008, 10:58:08 AM
I have the Creative Grids non-slip ruler which I use for all my regular old straight rotary cutting.  I've recently purchased some specialty angled rulers, but they don't have these non-slip marks which are sooo helpful.

I know I semi-recently saw on someone's blog about something you can adhere (or paint?) onto the ruler that keeps it from slipping on the fabric.  Anyone know about this?

I don't care for rulers that don't slide smoothly on the fabric. At quilt market a few years ago, I learned about Omnigrip - a "window cling" kind of plastic that adheres to the bottom of your Omnigrid (or other) rulers. You can slide the ruler as much as you like, and as soon as you press downward on it, it "sticks". I have had it on several of my rulers for three years, and it works great.

I use clear lightweight elastic and tie it on one end and wrap around as I go down the ruler, but be careful and don't get it twisted or it can mess up your cut.  I use it on my embroidery machine too on my hoops so they don't get sticky.

I also use the Omnigrip.  It works wonderfully. And the great thing is, if you're careful with the roll you can get many rulers out of it.  I'm up to 6 so far, with a small scrap left over to show my Learn to Quilt students.

I've used both the little thumb pads and Omnigrip and Omnigrip is by far the best for keeping rulers from slipping.  You can remove it and re- attach it if it isn't smooth or to put on another ruler.  Great stuff.

I can't find Omnigrip rulers in my local fabric store. Do you know where I can buy one online?

I found omnigrip rulers at Joann.com.
