Folding sewing table

    Folding sewing table
    on: March 27, 2009, 07:55:10 AM
Due to space limitations, I need a sewing table that I can set up in the spare room but fold and store when required.  I fear that most folding tables will be too shaky for a sewing machine.  Anyone know of a good sewing table?

    Thank you in advance.

I use just a plain old folding table that I got at Sam's Club (http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=364424&pCatg=3574).  I have the 6 foot long table, which means I can have my sewing machine at one end, and I can have my big rotary cutting mat on the other end with plenty of room.  When I'm using my serger, I just set it on top of the rotary mat.  It works great.  The table is extremely sturdy (it only shakes when I'm going at the highest speed of my powerful serger, which means I probably should slow down for the sake of accuracy anyway) and feels like very good quality.  The price at Sam's is great, too.  I couldn't find it for less anywhere else that I looked.

Thanks for your response. I was afraid that one of these tables would shake but I see from your link that the legs are well braced.  (Not like a traditional card table.)  I'd really prefer something under six feet for storage.  Homespun makes a table that is a bit smaller--but three times the price!

Not sure how good it is (or what your budget is), but this one seems to fit the bill: http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat3485&PRODID=prd40405

When I first moved into my apartment, I tried a 4 foot folding table ($40) from Home Depot.  Yeah, that thing shook A LOT.  It was painful to listen to.  As much as I wanted to have something I could put away when not in use, it was tough to find something that was small enough and didn't shake.  Eventually we decided to buy an extension table for our Ikea Expedit bookshelf, so now I sew on this:

When I'm not using it, we put other cool stuff on it, like the iMac sitting on the ground in that photo Smiley  I also get to store most of my fabric and sewing books on the bookshelf now, too.

When I lived with my parents, I just used the dining table.

Basically if there's nothing that will fold + not shake, try to find something that can serve multiple purposes.  Smiley

I absolutely love my SewEzi table...

I've had it for a year and got my mom one for Christmas.  It doesn't bounce at all.

I have a Koala Cabinet system / cutting / craft table.

I was just on their website and don't see the exact one there but you should be able to search for a shop that sells Koala Furniture and they might be able to help you. I love it. It folds down and has storage. When the table top is open the cutting board measures 68 inches by 26 inches.

The Koala table looks wonderful. I would love to have one like that!

I have a regular folding table and a card size one and they both work great!

I saw this on the martha stewart website the other day:

There aren't really any instructions, but if you or someone you know is handy, you could probably create something similar.  As for buying the heavy-duty slides, I would recommend looking on ebay.  We found some for a pull out pot pantry that my husband built in our kitchen, and they work great.

I used to sew on a folding table (metal legs, thick hard plastic top).  It shook a lot !   I found a sold wood table on craigslist for $40.00.  Give the choice, I'd never sew on a folding table again.

I'm currently using a table that came out of an old high school.  It's large enough for me to have my sewing machine on one end and my cutting mat on the other.  It sounds similar to qsogirl's setup.  It's not ideal, but it works.  My table is heavy solid wood - no wobble.

I love this:  http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=7&filter=sewing  Wish I knew someone handy enough to build it for me.  Cheesy

For me, regular tables are just not the right height to get the ergonomics right -- the machine sits up really high, so I have to try to jack my chair up a lot, at which point my knees are banging the underside of the table.  This has a recess for the machine, much like cabinets like the Koala ones.  The bonus is that it's small and completely portable.  I have even taken mine to a few sewing classes!  It comes with a plastic insert that is designed specifically for your machine (you tell them what model you have when you order), and also a solid insert to set the machine on in case you are doing sleeves where you need the free arm.  I highly recommend this.  I do free motion on it as well, and I don't find it to shake much.  In fact, you can see a video of me using this table for free motion.
And I promise this is not a paid endorsement!  Smiley

I recently purchased a table at IKEA that is working great for a sewing table.  It has two sides that fold out, so when closed, it is only about 10-12" wide.  Either side can be folded out as needed.  It was less that $100.
