What color thread do you use most often?

Hi all,

I was wondering what color thread everybody uses most often.  I know that there are special projects that require matching, and quilting is another story.  I mean for most projects like purses, and placemats, and apparel items, etc.  Do you always match the thread color to the main color in the fabric?  Or do you use something neutral because it doesn't tend to show that much?  For example, do you use black thread even if the fabric is actually navy blue?

I try and match thread to fabric as much as possible (navy blue for blue, and black for black) for all the projects you mentioned.  However, there are cases when it isn't feasible, like when your use several different fabrics in one project.   When I started quilting my grandmother gave me the tip of using grey thread to match a variety of colours.  It really does work well when you are working with a variety of different colours in one project, and I always keep several different shades of grey on hand. 

Cream, white, taupe , light gray & black are basics...

I have recently started using Gutermann thread because I can find it to match almost any color I am working with, and it is a very high quality thread.

The color I usually use and always run out of is off white.  It's Guttermann #22 and I also use 522 alot as well which is a khaki/greenish one.  For some reason I rarely use white, black or navy.

I always try to match.  I use the predominate color on fabrics with lots of colors.

I try to match, or if I'm topstitching I sometimes try to find a color that complements.  I usually use guttermann and like how many colors and types it comes in-  right now I have not only their polyester, but also cotton, silk, buttonhole, quilting and upholstery in my house.

In general I go through off white and white the most-  probably pink a close third since it's my niece's favorite color.

Thanks for the comments.  I was wondering because it seems like a pain to have to buy new thread every time you start a new project, plus it's expensive.  If you stock up when it goes on sale, then how do you know what to buy?  I guess you can stock up on basic colors and then just buy specialty colors when the need arises.

I have favorite colors that I often sew with, and when it goes on sale I'll pick those up, as well as basic colors like white, off white and black.

I used to match everything, but as my sewing got better I now use just slightly-off white on nearly everything, always Gutermann.

I'll be the weird one....I very rarely match my thread.  I like the look of contrast, it makes each piece way more funky!  If I'm making a bag using red fabric with white and green flowers, I will probably use green thread for topstitching. 

That being said, if I'm making something that is a little more "traditional" I will use matching thread and find myself most often using possibly that same Gutermann off-white.  It seems to blend in with almost anything.

I stock up on the basics, white cream gray and black, and then buy the smaller rolls and always match with fabrics

It really depends on the project I am working on.  If I want the top stitching to show I will use a contrasting thread.  On many of my projects though I will try to match the thread color with the fabric.

I run out of brown thread most often-- but brown in my favorite color, so many of my projects feature brown fabric.  A nice chocolate color without too much red in it blends with many shades of brown.

I buy ecru in bulk, it blends well with everything  but really dark fabrics.
