Different Types of Elastic? Oh my!

Different Types of Elastic? Oh my!
    on: June 28, 2008, 04:19:10 PM
I am making a pair of pajama shorts following the KwikSew book, Sewing for Toddlers.  This is my first clothing project. I went to pick up the 3/4" elastic the directions call for today, only to find four choices in my desired width.  I came across: Braided Elastic, Non-Roll Elastic, Ribbed Non-Roll Elastic, and Knit Elastic.

I have googled some terms around a bit, but haven't found any comparison of the types.  I could tell that some are more expensive than others, but I don't know what's preferable in an elastic waistband with a casing.  Could anybody describe the areas in which certain types of elastic are preferable, or what type of elastic you use yourself?

Thank you very much.  Looking forward to Summer Sewing Month Smiley

It's all very confusing to me too, but what I use in my kids' pajama bottoms is the standard non-roll elastic (3/4" I believe), but while I was perusing online to see the types you mentioned, I saw that there is a new knit non-roll elastic.  This might be more comfortable as it doesn't have the bulky ribbing that the old standard type has.  It also says that it can be used outside of a casing.  Handy!

Hopefully someone else can give you a better pro/con list for all those elastics, but there's a little something to get you started.  : )

When I make PJ pants/shorts, I like to use 1" non-roll elastic.  Anything less wide usually rolls and it gets frustrating having a twisted elastic.  I didn't even know they made ribbed non-roll and knit elastic...

Thanks, you guys. Smiley  I went ahead with the Knit Non-Roll type that I found at Hancock Fabrics.  And when I picked that up, I also noticed a specific Pajama/Underwear Elastic!  It looked similar to the Knit Non-Roll so I just stuck with that.

I like to use stretchrite Polybraid elastic on most things.
