Sewing Sleeveless Armholes

    Sewing Sleeveless Armholes
    on: June 29, 2008, 04:31:46 PM
I am a beginner seamstress, well I wouldn't even call myself that but I am sure you get my point...Anyway,  I have been IN LOVE with the pillowcase dresses and they are just way too expensive for me to buy one for my 2 year old daughter. So, I decided to try to make one...found two patterns on the internet, one without bias tape and one with - I decided to go with the one without because the one with bias tape just looked too difficult. Well, I tried sewing the armholes and it puckered REALLY bad...HELP! The last time I sewed anything was 15 or more years ago in 4-H and the county extension lady was there with me to help...
Also, while we are on the subject, to show you how horrible (or new) I am with sewing --  bias tape...how do you use it? All I know how to do is fold the fabric and make a seam...a STRAIGHT seam...You're really working with a challenged woman here! HELP!!!!!!!!!

The only advice I can give for sewing that armhole is just go slowly.  A little puckering is fine.  Remember, it will be hidden by an arm  Wink

Also, I try to pull the armhold straight instead of sewing it like a curve.  It tends to sew more smoothly this way for me.  And, I flatten as I go.  Leave your needle in the down position that way you can adjust without losing your spot.

I usually use bias tape because I hate sewing those little folded hems on those armholes.  This is a great tutorial on how to sew bias tape:

Amy Karol shows us how to sew it on perfectly!

I hope this helps you out some.

I am a visual learner when it comes to learning how to do something "physical", I can comprehend everything else I read but when it comes to this...NOPE! So.....THANKS!!! I looked all over the world for someone to SHOW me how to do it - now, I know!!!
        Thanks again,

You are so welcome.  I'm visual as well.  I can usually get through written instructions, but I would much rather see it done!  I'm so glad that I could help you find this link.  Thanks Amy Karol for a great tutorial!
