Easy pillow case instructions

    Easy pillow case instructions
    on: April 13, 2009, 07:58:08 AM
I'm making pillowcases for Con Kerr Cancer; this organization delivers cheery pillowcases to locally hospitalized children & adolescents. (I live in Maine, so the pillowcases will go to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital.)
The instructions on the site result in a pillowcase that is simply sewn up the sides, so the outer band has visible seam allowance. I would like to make a pillowcase that results in a 'folded over' band, so the seam allowance doesn't show. Anyone have any instructions for a quick method to accomplish this? And, check out the website @ Conkerrcancer.org.
Thanks, everyone - this is my first ever forum entry!

You could sew the pillowcases together with French seams.  Basically, divide your seam allowance in 2 allowances (if you're using a 5/8" allowance, this would be 1/4" and 3/8").  With the WRONG sides of your fabric together, sew around your edges of the pillowcase with the smaller allowance (1/4").  Trim to 1/8".  Flip the pillowcase inside out, press all around the edges and sew on this side @ 3/8."  Flip the pillowcase inside out again, press, and you should have very neat seams on the inside of the pillow now that are not visible from the outside.

Good luck with all of your very worthwhile efforts.  I'm sure your pillowcases will bring many a smile to dreary hospital rooms.

Kate at Free Motion blog posted a tutorial on making a Magical Pillowcase not too long ago

So nice to brighten their day. I was going to suggest french seams too.

This is how I do them:

(Not my blog, just good tutorial, LOL!)
It leaves all the raw edges from the contrast edging inside the band, and if you do a French seam, no raw edges along the long edge, either.  I can whip one of these out, with piping, in less time than it takes to cut out the fabric.  They are great kid birthday presents, too.
(I'm glad you're doing this charity - my son needs a service project in the Fall, and we've already bookmarked that site and will start watching fabric sales.)
