I started sewing last Septmber and made my first quilt in January. I also have to small kids. Just work on it a little every night and it will be done in no time. Here are some links to blogs that have amazing tutorials for quilting.

Here's the link to my first quilt. It's really simple. I didn't know how to machine quilt so I used the trying method. It's super easy. (Don't add buttons for a baby's quilt unless it's only hanging on the wall)

I have been a sewer for a very long time and just finished my 1st quilt. Even with my experience I just went with simple squares and a few railfence blocks for interest. It doesn't have to be complicated!

It also doesn't have to be "perfect" to look nice :-)

          So - go for it!

pick a pattern that is not too difficult and is easy to complete.
            For example:
1.make some "bricks" (rectangles 4x 7.5") and sew them in rows to make a
patchwork of fabrics. Off set the seams so that you dont have to match those points and
bingo bango you have a quilt top. Make your top _smaller_ than 42" in at least one direction.
Now you can use whole cloth for the back.
            now you have :
            a. the top done
            b. the back done
            that was easy ..

            2. for a first quilt lay quilt top and back facing each other on top of each other place batting or pre wshed flannel on top of that .
sew around edge leaving 10" hole in edge to pull fabric thru.
flip right sides out and sew up hole (by hand maybe?)
tie or quilt your almost completed project...

try making a 12x18 burb cloth or diaper pad first and then try a crib quilt ....
by the power invested in me by this magic wand
            ...BBOOM!
            your a quilter.

I think sometimes people with a skill forget how tough that skill is to aquire. Clothes easier than a flat quilt?? Ha I don't think so.

Ok, you have gotten some awesome advice and encouragement for making a quilt...I might use some of it!  Here is how I learned to sew straight...a magnetic seam guide!  It sticks to your sewing machine needle plate and stops your fabric from running away from you!  I think I got mine from Hobby Lobby for, like $4!  Not a bad price for my sanity at the time...because after a while, I didn't need it anymore!  The more you sew, the better you get.  Now if you don't mind, I think I will use some of "your" encouragement to try a more involved quilt, because all I've done so far are 6" x 6" blocks, and I want to make some of these beautiful quilts I've been seeing in everyone's blogs!  Happy sewing!  Cheesy
