    cutting table
    on: May 05, 2009, 11:51:05 AM
Hi guys, i've been looking for cutting table with 36" height and haven't had luck finding one. I got one from IKEA but it is too small so i had to retunr it. Then i found one from Joann but was defective (i tried two of the same products and had to return them both). i am so frustrated. Where to shop for cutting table?

A good table can be hard to find.  Here's a link to a site which has some great information regarding tables which might help you find one: http://www.notmartha.org/tomake/cuttingtable/

I glued a gridded rotary cutting mat to the top of mine, but have the same table top and adjustable legs from IKEA and love them! Smiley

I'm not sure where you were shopping at IKEA, but the "Workspace" area sells tops and legs separately, so you can get the size you want.  Good luck!

I am planning on going to IKEA next month (its a 4 hr drive, it acutally in another country lol) so i have to plan what i want to buy in advance and i cant seem to find the name of the table that you suggested.

So can one of you please suggest a table that would make a good cutting table as i am in desperate need of one.

I'm pretty sure mine is from the VIKA series.  If you go to the IKEA site (at least the US version) and search for VIKA, all of the components will come up.

My husband just bought me a beautiful kitchen island to use for a cutting table from Big lots.  It's the perfect height to stand out..lots of storage and looks great...only 200.00.  Just a thought...8 ))

I don't know if you hubby is very handy, but mine made mine and it didn't seem too complicated.  He also made me a sewing table to go with it.  That way it was made especially for my height.  I LOVE them!  You can see a picture of them here.

If you think you or your hubby or someone you know could do this, I would be happy to take more pictures to show you how it was built.  It was really cheap this way too!  Good luck!

Dixiemango - Do I see a hole for your machine to drop into in your sewing table?  That is awesome.  Is there a lift in it, or is it static?

Yup!  There is a hole. It is static, but the shelf it is on can be easily taken out and put on the top of the table and then I can put the machine on there and sew with it that way if I need to.  I love it!

I Use the IKEA adjustable legs (you can order them online - they are $15) and screwed them into a solid wood door (these are like hollow core, but not, well, hollow).

Hollow core doors are fine but they have a wood frame that runs the perimeter of the door, so they are hollow in the middle which means that you'd be screwing the legs into nothing. Because of that, you'd have to add some 1x6s to the door so the legs screw into wood. Home Depot or Lowes will cut them for you - just cut them to the appropriate width of the door (28", 32" or 36"), then glue - use wood glue -  them to the door at both ends and in the middle; you can then screw the legs into the 1x6. Word of caution, get flat wood. Much of it is bowed. This is actually quite easy to do.

OR...use the Closetmaid Cubes (from Target) http://www.closetmaid.com/Look/Product_Catalog/product.cfm?product_id=1976 and put a piece of wood on top of it. These are almost 36" tall.

                          Good luck!

That is a great idea.  Then you have storage for fabric!
