Tic Tac Toe Teacher's Gift

    Tic Tac Toe Teacher's Gift
    on: May 13, 2009, 06:57:43 AM
I made a fabric tic tac toe gift for my son's kindergarten classroom teacher for an end of the year gift.  I like the idea of making/buying something for the classroom since so often the teachers have to provide things for their rooms.  It's blogged about here:

Now, here is my dilemma.  I was thinking of it as a gift to the classroom sort of which I am sure will be fine and appreciated by the teacher.  Now what about the aide?  I think she may be in a different classroom next year, we don't know yet.  Does she need a separate gift?  Thoughts?  I am new to this since my oldest is in kindergarten!

So cute. Thats a wonderful gift for the teacher & I don't know about a gift for the aide. I homeschool so don't have to worry about gifts.

This is a great idea.  I love the feel of big manipulatives in your hand for games and I know those students will even more so.  I agree with Lauranie--headbands would be a great gift.  She has some on her blog which are super cute if you're looking for inspiration: http://sewmylife.blogspot.com/2009/05/teacher-appreciation.html

Thanks for the headband idea and link.  Your headbands look great.  The aide is an older woman who might not wear them but I might try some for myself so that the idea won't go to waste  Smiley  I like the idea of baking for her but since the classroom is peanut free, tree nut free and pork free, you can't bring any food into the room that isn't wrapped from a store.  Sigh, I waited years to bake classroom cupcakes and it's no longer allowed!  I will keep thinking of ideas for the aide but it sounds like you all agree that I should give her something for herself so I will do that.

Hi!  I'm new to this forum and really sewing in general and I had a question about the tic tac toe game.  I love this idea.  My five year old loves tic tac toe, and we are getting ready for a big road trip so this would be perfect to take along.  My question is about the binding.  Did you use a different fabric, or did you just fold the back fabric over?  Does that question even make sense?  Like I said, I'm new to sewing and trying to figure it out on my own.

As a former teacher I would say that you can never go wrong with chocolate.  I loved when students gave me my favorite candy or even a small box of nice chocolates.  Smiley

Thanks for the chocolates idea.  It's good to hear from teachers!  I made the binding as you would a quilt binding.  It's a 2 1/2 inch wide piece.  The teacher's was made using scraps from all the materials used in the board sewn together to make the strip.  The one that we are keeping is all one solid color.  There is a good tutorial here for binding:  http://heatherbailey.typepad.com/photos/continuous_quiltbinding/index.html.  I suppose you could also use ready made bias tape.

I wish I would have thought of the different colored squares for the board!  I did a portable one with magnets and fabric covered buttons.

I'm loving the idea of a gift for the classroom, DD teacher has requested no gifts but would gladly take supply donations, things for the room etc. so this would be perfect!
