Ottobre difficulty level
on: May 18, 2009, 07:29:12 PM
What would you say the difficulty level would be of the Ottobre patterns? I'm new to sewing and want to start making my kids clothing but not sure if it would be a good idea to plunge into Ottobre at this stage.

Ottobre patterns can be challenging. The instructions are sparse, the patterns must be traced, and you have to add your own seam allowances. At times, there can be alot of flipping from one pattern to another which can get confusing. Considering all this, I would say Ottobre is more for the intermediate level sewer. If you are a new sewer, have the patience and want a challenge, I would say go for it. I think a beginning seamstress could definitely sew and have success with an Ottobre pattern, but it will not come easy.

I am new to this forum, I joined because I am looking for a certain ottobre magazine and am hoping someone will have an extra! However, I wanted to share a tracing trick for ottobre patterns. If you lay out paper, and top it with black carbon paper, you can lay out your ottobre pattern on top and just use something pointy like a chopstick, to draw right on top of whatever color pattern you want. I move around my carbons, and keep tracing this way until my pattern has all been made beneath on the white roll paper. it is an easier way to keep track of your pattern.
