Serger or cutoff foot?

    Serger or cutoff foot?
    on: May 19, 2009, 12:49:23 PM
Hi ladies, I was wondering if anyone has used the cutoff foot instead of a serger? Does this foot do the same thing as a serger? I am pretty new to sewing but I have fallen in love with it!!! Thanks!!!

I think that you're thinking of the feet that cut off the edge while you are zig zagging.

They're not going to be the same thing as the overlock stitch that a serger can do-  it will be more like what you get if you zig zag the edge of a fabric and trim it off close to the edge.  Personally, I prefer a serger, but it really does depend on what you're making.  The zig zag stitch is fine for some things, but won't work for others-  like exposed seams will look better if serged.  You also can do a rolled edge/hem stitch with a serger, that isn't possible with a zig zag edge.
