I think that it's probably the thread, also.  Gutermann's is an excellent brand, and I've always enjoying using it.

It is probably the thread, but be sure you have the machine threaded correctly. The machine will still sew if it isn't threaded properly, but you will have problems. Be sure when the foot is down there is some tension when you pull the thread. It should not be free-flowing if you know what I mean.

I was threading my machine wrong for years. I felt foolish when the lady at my sewing machine explained to me the correct way to thread, but now I really glad she did. She told me to use two hand and floss-like on the first pass up when threading - to make sure it catches. I hope that makes sense.

Coats has always given me problems, even when "just" sewing garments. Of course, checking tension, rethreading, new needle and the like are things I would try first. I try to watch for the sales so the nicer thread doesn't cost too much.

        Glad you got it working!

I have trouble using Coats and Clarks too!  Just dab some drops of "Sewer's Aid" oil on your spool and you should be good to go!  It would always happen when I wanted to do buttonholes, and I found this notion to be a lifesaver.

Has anyone tried the "New" Coats & Clark thread? I loathed the old, linty stuff and used Gutterman almost exclusively.   But my Hobby Lobby started carrying the new and improved Coats thread a couple of months ago so I bought a spool of white to try.  I compared it side by side to Gutterman and Mettler and honestly, it is every bit as smooth now!  It sews beautifully too.  I was really impressed and bought a few more colors.  I haven't had any breakage at all (beyond silly user error.)  NAYY, I just thought I'd point out that the  new Coats thread is a LOT better!  (You can tell its the new kind because of the spool.  The new spool looks more like a Gutterman or Mettler spool, smooth edges with the wraparound thread catcher.

Hmmm.... I just might have to give it a try.  I would love to spend less on thread!

I haven't. But the August issues of Threads magazine features an in depth article with Coats about thread making and includes pictures of the thread making process. Interesting.

I would totally be willing to try new thread. Spending less would be great, but just not fighting with it would be the real win for me!
