Sewing bias tape on neck and other places

Does anyone do this successfully with a machine and have it look nice?  Here's my method:

Opening the bias tape and sewing raw edges together with the right sides touching and then I flip it over and fold in the edge and topstitch it together.  The problem is, it always leaves a funky looking stitch on the underside.  It looks like a toddler sewed it, and it doesn't matter how hard I try to line them up, I either end up missing the bias tape or catching it somewhere in the middle. 

I'm at the point where I'm thinking I need to stitch it by hand like a quilt binding, which I'm ok with, but it bothers me that I can't get a professional looking edge with my machine. 

Does anyone have tips for this?

That being said, it is still a bit difficult for me to put the tape along sharper curves.  I find that I just have to stickpin the bujeezus out of it, and take each pin out slowly right before I get to it (but while it's already held down by the presser foot).  It makes the process last forever, but it's given me the best results.  Good luck!

I did a blanket edge stitch to attach the bias trim on a couple Oliver + S pajama bottoms... it turned out quite adorable. If you go to the last picture on my blog, you can see a picture:

Heather, your clothes are absolutely exquisite!  I'm in awe.  I think the blanket stitch would be harder in this case though, but thanks for the idea, I'll keep it in mind.

Your method sounds like how I would do it for quilts.

If I recall correctly the Angry Chicken video mentioned above is the traditional way to do it for clothing. Store bought double fold bias tape is pre-ironed to work this way with one side just a bit wider than the other. I usually do it the opposite way and stitch in the ditch on the outside but either way works.

If you have difficulty with curves it really helps to steam iron the bias tape into shape before you sew.
