Husqvarna vs. Bernina

    Husqvarna vs. Bernina
    on: July 16, 2008, 11:33:31 AM
    Hello all!
I'm in the market for a new machine, and as far as dealers goes, I can get hands on with a Husqvarna and a Bernina. Any thoughts / inputs on either? I'm looking at the Sapphire 830 model - and yes, I did read the post on the Sapphire vs a Janome. I haven't considered the Janome's yet, but I'm going to look into them.

I basically want a machine that has quilting features, but no embroidery and isn't top of the line, or bottom of the line.

What are your experiences with either brand?

I have both a Viking Designer I and a Bernina 440. I absolutely would recommend a Bernina if quilting is your bag. I especially love the BSR and have been putting in serious sewing time in on the Bernina since I bought it last fall. Actually I bought the Bernina as was not happy with how my Designer I was quilting. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!

Hi!  I don't own either a Husquvarna or a Bernina, but I saw where you may consider Janome, so I wanted to put in a plug for the Janome 6600P.  I also considered a Bernina 440, but when I found the Janome it just felt "right" and it is a great quilting machine.  Try them all if you can, and see which feels like the best fit for you! I own/have owned Berninas, Vikings, and Pfaffs. My question is; when you say quilt, do you mean actually quilting the layers, or are you talking about just piecing? If piecing, Pfaff, Bernina and Viking all make midrange machines that are very good to excellent. Try all three makes and see what feels best for you.

If you are talking quilting, seriously consider a home style midarem with frame. There are some nice models that don't break the bank and you will be AMAZED at how much it adds to your quilting experience. I use HandiQuilter and am very pleased with my results.

Also consider the dealers in your area. Easy access to repairs, annual cleaning, accessories, and just plain good advice when you have a problem are worth their weight in gold.

If there is a quilt show coming to your area, do visit and try every machine you can get your hands on. Your own experience is the best guide.

I started with a Viking, went to a Janome and just got a Bernina 440.  I love it, love it, love it.  I love the BSR for so many things, this machine is very dependable and I too have put lots of hours into it with no problems.
