Charm Packs

    Charm Packs
    on: May 25, 2009, 11:10:25 AM
I've always been a prewasher when it comes to fabric, especially cotton.  I've been eyeing a charm pack, but haven't bought it since I have no clue how to prewash it!  Help!

What is a charm pack and how is it different than fat quarters?

        Charm packs are 5" squares.

I'm a prewasher too and don't use pre-cuts for this very reason!

I have washed Charm Squares through.  I just put them in a lingerie bag and threw them in with other laundry or fabric.  Just make sure that you separate them first (i.e. don't just put the stack in the lingerie bag).

I know that Moda recommends NOT prewashing their pre-cuts, and I think it's a good idea with long strips like Jelly Rolls that are likely to warp in the wash.  However, I've never had any issues washing the charm squares, and I'm sure the same is true with the Layer Cakes (10" squares).

          Good luck! Smiley

Anybody know where to get some nice charm squares? I've been thinking I would love to have a bunch for various projects. I probably won't prewash.

Thanks Elizabeth.  I normally don't get charm packs--I like to buy half yard cuts.  But I love how charm packs include so many different prints!  Do the squares fray at all when you stick them in a lingerie bag?

caitlinsmom, I've been looking on Etsy mostly.  I've seen a few at pinkchalkfabrics.com, too.

Thanks. I'll check them out. I love the fact that you get so many different pretty prints in one!

The manufacturer-produced ones usually have pinked edges, and those edges get a little fuzzy, but I've not noticed any serious fraying.  The only thing I did notice is that having all the square jammed into a lingerie bag meant that they didn't dry very well in the dryer.  I didn't think it was a big deal though.  It's easy enough to just press them between towels to draw out any remaining moisture.
