    Fabric for children's PJ's
    on: July 18, 2008, 10:14:43 AM
Hi! Looking for advice here. I sell items on Etsy and to a local boutique. The boutique owner has asked me to do some pajamas for her because parents are always asking. However, I know there are regulatory standards and flame resistant requirements for pajamas and I don't feel comfortable just using the cotton that I use for dresses, etc.

So - do any of you have knowledge of some PJ material - or have experience with selling PJ's and can share how you ensure that your products meet safety requirements?

    Thanks in advance!  Smiley

You can buy the fabric at Joanns, but honestly, most of my clients don't want that polyester stuff. The chemicals used to make it "flame retardant" wash out in the laundry, anyhow, and I avoid unnecessary chemicals. You will find "pajamas" sold as "lounge sets" fairly frequently, for this reason. I don't know how you could legally sell them at a boutique. Perhaps ask the owner of the shop, explaining the problem.

For my own children (and now for my granddaughter), I used plain cotton flannel or wovens for all of our sleepwear.

We use yummy cotton flannel at our house!  My thought is that I'd rather their PJ's burn off of them rather than melt onto them.

That said, here's the "official" word on children's pajamas, including label you can add that doesn't specifically say NOT for pajamas, but issues the "buyer beware" for consumers.

"For child's safety, garment should fit snugly.  This garment is not flame resistant.  Loose-fitting garment is more likely to catch fire."

The things you have to think of when you're selling things, whew!

        Still flannel fans,
